Police are investigating a shooting in Brooklyn that shattered the back window of an SUV driven by New York State Assemblyman William Boyland Jr. while his young son was in the car.
Both Boyland and his 7-year-old son were unharmed in the incident, which happened at about 6 p.m. Wednesday.
The gunfire erupted at the intersection of Sutter and Saratoga avenues in the East New York section of Brooklyn. Neighbors say they heard up to three gunshots.
“I was getting ready to take a shower and I heard three pops. I thought they were firecrackers,” said neighbor Carl Young.
Israel Narvaez said he emerged from his house after hearing police sirens and saw the lawmaker standing next to a GMC Yukon with a blown out rear window.
“I guess no one is safe,” Narvaez said.
Boyland represents the state’s 55th Assembly District, which includes the neighborhood where he was fired upon.
The four-term assemblyman was indicted in March in a bribery and corruption case with others, including state Sen. Carl Kruger of Brooklyn.
He’s pleaded not guilty to charges he accepted money as a consultant in return for his influence on behalf of a health care group.
In addition, an Albany newspaper investigation found the lawmaker spent hours playing Facebook social networking games when the legislature was in session.
Police do not believe Boyland was the intended target of the gunfire. The investigation is ongoing.
