Repair work on a tram line came to a halt in the Polish city of Lodz after workers uncovered the remains of a pre-WWII Jewish cemetery, Reuters reported. The report said it was the oldest Jewish cemetery in the city and dated from 1811, but had been buried under a housing estate by communist authorities after the war, which devastated Poland.
Poland’s chief rabbi said he hoped a compromise could be found to respect the Jewish ban on disturbing human remains and the city’s need to upgrade one of its main transport routes.
