Libyan dictator Moammar Khadafy’s youngest son was killed in a NATO air strike Friday, the country’s rebel fighters said in an unconfirmed report.

Khamis Khadafy, who commands one of regime’s strongest military brigades, was allegedly taken down in the western town of Zlitan.

NATO officials could not confirm the death but said their forces had carried out strikes on an ammunition depot and military police facility in the town, which is 90 miles southeast of the capital Tripoli.

For months, Zlitan has been one of the main fighting fronts between rebel fighters and Colonel Khadafy’s troops, who went to war in February.

His death could pose a significant blow to his father’s regime and its mission to overthrow the rebels, but this is not the first time he has been rumored killed.

In late March, rebels claimed Khamis was killed in an airstrike only to see him appear on state television days later.

One of Khadafy’s seven biological sons and three of his grandchildren were killed in May when a NATO airstrike targeted the despot’s home in Tripoli’s Ghargour neighborhood.

The Libyan leader and his wife were inside but escaped unharmed.
