NYC Officials Close 4 Beaches Including Sea-Gate Due To Sewage Leak

New York City health officials have closed several beaches due to elevated levels of bacteria related to last week’s discharge of raw sewage into the Hudson River.

Officials on Monday say water samples collected from Brooklyn’s Sea Gate Beach showed elevated bacteria levels. That beach and Staten Island’s South Beach, Midland Beach and Cedar Grover Beach were closed until further notice. Elevated bacteria levels were not found at the Staten Island beaches, but officials closed them out of an abundance of caution.

Officials on both sides of the Hudson have been testing water samples since a wastewater treatment plant in Harlem was crippled by fire on Wednesday.

Boaters, swimmers and water skiers are still being urged to stay out of the water between the George Washington and Verrazano Narrows bridges.
