200 Inmates Evacutated In Fast-Moving Rikers Island Fire

A fast-moving fire forced the evacuation of a Rikers Island jail Sunday night, officials said.

The blaze broke out about 8:10 p.m. in a heating unit of the George Motchan Detention Center, authorities said, forcing the evacuation of about 200 inmates.

Several inmate dormitories were destroyed, a source said.

The prisoners were being housed in other facilities on Rikers Island last night. There were no injuries.

“As soon as the smoke was detected, everybody was evacuated quickly,” said Correction Department spokesperson Sharman Stein.

The cause of the two-alarm blaze was under investigation.
