The U.S. has decided to formally resume contact with Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood group – which does not recognize Israel – in a move that could further alienate some Jewish voters already skeptical of President Barack Obama, it was reported.
One senior U.S. official said the Brotherhood’s rise in political prominence after the forced departure of former President Hosni Mubarak earlier this year makes the American contact necessary.
“The political landscape in Egypt has changed, and is changing… It is in our interests to engage with all of the parties that are competing for parliament or the presidency,” said the official, who confirmed the news to Reuters on condition of anonymity.
The Muslim Brotherhood – founded in 1928 to promote a conservative version of Islam in politics, culture and society – has previously had some communication with the U.S. through Brotherhood Members of Parliament who had been technically elected as independents. U.S. diplomats had been instructed only to deal with Brotherhood members in their role as Members of Parliament.
The decision to resume contact with the Muslim Brotherhood group may worry members of the Jewish community and Israeli officials, Reuters reported.
POLITICO’s Ben Smith wrote yesterday about the increasing anxiety of center-left Jewish Democrats who are losing faith in Obama, most recently because of the speech in which he called for the country’s 1967 borders to be the basis for peace talks, with “land swaps.”

Why is everyone surprised this has been his objective since taking office, to have a world wide Moslem government.
The facts are very obvious in Egypt, take a leader who has been loyal to the US for over 30 years and throw him to the animals knowing full well that the Islamic brotherhood would take over the power vacuum.
A brother for a brother!
Obama is sinking fast.
Yet another reason he should be impeached.
He takes so many unAmerican steps “unilaterally” and no one in Congress is seeking formal procedures to impeach him?
Where is Bill Starr when you really need him???
Ignorant fools…I suppose you think Nixon’s opening a dailogue with China meant he was a Communist! The Muslim Brotherhood is becoming a power to be reckoned with in Egypt…and we’d better be talking to them.
You guys are the best PR I can imagine supporting the position that a classic liberal arts education is necessary…and shows why our milirary academies require that all cadets take a core liberal arts curriculum that includes history and political science. You remind me of a Conservative Jew mouthing off about Halacha…hot air.
Unlike many other Frum Yidden at least we finally have an honest President, Emes goes a long way in H-shms eyes. We have a lot to aspire to and Emes folks although maybe not good are better off then Sheker good folks. I’m proud of Obama’s Emes and all of us Yidden should emulate that awesome trait that he was blessed with, Halvie V’yater!!
#1, your comment is inane and I feel less intelligent for having read it.
I don’t see the problem with the Muslim Brotherhood. They are the new rulers in Egypt, and we need to respect the people of Egypt’s wishes and sovereignty.
Glenn Beck is the only one who sees a problem with the Muslim Brotherhood, and the extreme right wing mindlessly follow him.
I wonder if Obama is doing all this in an effort to get Muslim money for his campaign…
What’s he supposed to do? Ignore the group that will probably be ruling Egypt?
The fact is that the Muslim Brotherhood are the new rulers of Egypt.
Obama is 100% correct for opening a dialogue with them.
I also believe Obama should open a dialogue with Hamas in Gaza and Hizbullah in Lebanon. America needs to respect the sovereignty of Palestine and of Lebanon, and respect the democratically elected leaders of these countries.
Peace!
Givev it up ProudLiberal…you’re not fooling any of us anymore, no matter which side of an issue we are on.
This article contains absolutely no information about the content of the “contact” between the US and the Muslim Brotherhood. That does not stop the Obama haters from jumping to absurdly unfounded conclusions that the goal of the President Obama is to establish a Muslim world government (which sounds like something modeled after the Jewish world government so feared by anti-Semites for centuries) or raise money from Muslims (which also echoes anti-Semitic beliefs that Jews have secret stores of money by which they control the world).
This article reports nothing other than (i) the US plans to have contact with a rising political faction in Egypt, and (ii) opinions by a Reuters correspondent or pundit that some Jews are uncomfortable about this development. I urge all Jews (and all others, as well) to form their opinions after they have the facts, not before.
to #’s 7-8-and 10, the Moslem brotherhood which if you know is a radical Islamic group dedicated to the destruction of Israel.
If obama did not get involved in internal Egyptian policy then Mobarik would still be in power, and by the way he was friendly to Israel and had no issue with selling Natural gas to Israel. The case now is Israel is only receiving 20-30% Of the natural gas they got before and Israelis are facing a 20 % hike in their electric bills. SO take your liberal …. and ………..
Reaction: couldn’t agree more. Yes we must emulate an anti-semite. Like the saying goes the best anti-semite is the Jew himself. So guess you fit that profile. He is not truthful and you must be blind?
Yaakiv dov: yes he is to ignore them. What next you want hin to give them money to fund the destruction of Israel which is their goal and the possible goal of this monkey in the white house?
Proud: as always you are the brainless wonder. Are you and the two I mentioned above really serious? Are you all three truly Jewish? If you are the latter than I am sorry for Klal Yisroel but glad you are the minority. With brethren (and I use the term loosley) like you three it is a good thing you are the minority and should hold on to that position. Hey maybe you can all ask Obama to go with him back to his muslim brothers after he leaves office after the next election? Give it a try…..
There is absolutely nothing wrong with *talking*; during WW2 the US even talked to Hitler yemach shmo. What matters is what we say to them.
#14, you’re totally wrong. Mubarak was headed out no matter what Obama said. Obama told Mubarak to leave when it was clear the Egyptian people hated Mubarak, and would have hated the US if they saw us as holding onto the dictator. And the reason why the Egyptians threw off Mubarak had nothing to do with Israel.
By talking you are starting somewhere in agreement that each side has a point. That is called negotiations. Of course the libs dont understand that because all they want is for people to cave into their demands.
The libs are in the minority in this country albeit with big fat mouths. It is the “far right” as one lib called it here that is truly the center of the country.
Hows that hopey changey thingy going for you libs??
Hey Levin…exactly who is refusing to compromise in the debt ceiling “negotiations?” Dumbkopf
No. 18: Not only are you challenged by facts and reason, your punctuation could use some improvement.
There is nothing in liberalism that calls for “everyone to cave in to their demands.” There is nothing in most other political viewpoints, including reasonable conservative viewpoints, that call for “everyone to cave in to their demands” either.
As for “libs” being a “minority” in the US, that is a measure which fluctuates considerably from time to time and varies according to how it is measured. “Cons” are a minority if you compare the numbers of registered Republicans to registered Democrats. “Cons” are a minority if you compare the numbers of opponents of abortion to supporters of abortion. “Cons” are a minority if you compare the numbers of opponents of same-sex marriage to supporters of same-sex marriage; of course, “cons” are a majority if you compare the number of actual opposite-sex marriages to the number of actual same-sex marriages, and that comparison will probably not change even if same-sex marriage is legalized by all 50 states; so you got one right, if we accept the measures I proposed. As for the count of “big fat mouths,” I am not sure how that one pays out.
And, almost finally, please remember that when using colloquial contractions, such as the first word of your last sentence, educated people use an apostrophe between the first complete word and the omitted (“conracted”) letter or letters.
And, finally, hows about my new, obnoxious abbreviation for people of your political viewpoint? Is it working out for you? I doubt I will use it again, but I would like to know whether you find it annoying, complimentary, or none of the above.
I bring you a message from ProudLiberal:
“The Muslim Brotherhood is a peaceful organization. Their name is clearly indicative of that. Now they are the legitimate rulers of Egypt. Thank goodness the despotic pharaoh Mubarak is out of power, so he can no longer kill innocent civilians.
The Muslim Brotherhood does not wish to annihilate anyone. It simply wishes to repudiate the Zionist entity, which is the real aggressor. The Brotherhood only wishes to recognize the Allah-given rights of the oppressed Palestinian people, in order to end the occupation that began in 1947.
Obama, thankfully, realizes who he must ally himself with. However, his support for Israel is still too much. He must cut off contact with Butcher-man Netanyahu, and place sanctions on Israel until it agrees to retreat from the 1967 occupation lines. Then the bastard Zionist government should negotiate with the legitimate Fatah-Hamas government for a complete Arab takeover of Palestine, and the occupying Jews should return, as Helen Thomas beautifully said, to Germany and Poland.
Unfortunately, the racist Glenn Beck types have no concern for the downtrodden Palestinians, and manage to dupe Congress into supporting Israel. Thankfully, the President is a true champion of human rights and liberty for all people, not just Jews and Christians.”
