Israel will no longer allow Sudanese migrants who enter its territory illegally to stay. The Olmert government decided Sunday to grant asylum to around 500 refugees from the Darfur genocide who had crossed into Israel from neighboring Egypt in recent months.
But with the total number of illegal Sudanese migrants approaching the thousands, the government said it was instituting a mandatory deportation policy.
The first group of deportees, numbering around 50, was sent back into Egyptian territory late Saturday. Haaretz reported that it included refugees from Darfur.
The Israeli decision drew criticism from human rights groups which argued that the Jewish state, founded on the ashes of the Holocaust, has a moral obligation to take in those fleeing genocide.

How can anybody critsize the ‘medina’ for this?
I don’t agree with 75% of its actions but this isn’t one of them.
The genoside is in Darfur/ Sudan not Egypt. let them stay in Egypt or in the w bank or gaza..
But as usual israeli govt. has absolutly no clue on how to handle anything w/o criticism.
They need a good PR firm to help ’em out…
Who really cares what these human rights groups say they’ll always be criticizing. How many refugees can 1 single small country take in????? Maybe they should take in 10 million refs from there………..
This all depends if these refugees are jewish or even claiming to be. If they are then yes Israel is under a moral obligation to allow them in as being founded as a safe haven for jews everywhere. If not there are many safe havens for these people and Israel has the right like every other country to make immigration laws. If there is noone else to take in these people than maybe the stance of Israel should change but at this point thAT is not true!

“Earlier this month, Israel’s Channel 10 interviewed Israeli soldiers who said they had witnessed Egyptian security officers executing several Darfur refugees.
According to Channel 10, their testimonies were backed up by Israeli military security cameras that showed Egyptian soldiers shooting and killing several asylum-seekers.
Channel 10 did not air the video.
According to Haaretz, one of the asylum-seekers “jumped on the wire fence in an attempt to make it over to the Israeli side, but was reportedly dragged back and bludgeoned to death by the Egyptians.”
Responding to the report, Human Rights Watch called on Egypt to investigate the reported deaths.”
