The organizer of a scheduled rally against illegal immigration has canceled the event, deciding there was not enough security to protect the crowd and speakers. Diane Reeves of Lakewood, who planned the Aug. 25 protest at the town square on Clifton Avenue, pointed to rumors that such gangs as MS 13 and the Latin Kings, as well as some out-of-town militant groups, would disrupt the rally.
Lakewood Mayor Raymond Coles stressed that the privately organized rally in Lakewood did not justify taking more officers off patrol duty, and the township could not afford the overtime.
Estimates of the number of illegal immigrants in Lakewood range from 5,000 to 20,000. A 2006 estimate by the U.S. Census bureau put the township’s population at almost 70,000.

Rallys are important since they raise awareness about problems at large. The amount of immigrants in Lakewood is huge, this has a negative impact on the community. The Mayor should be convinced to allow more police protection at the rally, he is “coping” out.

Have you ever been to Mexico? Conditions there are deplorable. For many, especially for women, it really is a matter of saving one’s life, lest they be sold in to all forms of slavery, C”V.
My grandmother A”H entered this country illegally in the 40s. Had she stayed in Hungary, I would certainly not be here. Surely some said, “these dirty Jews aren’t really persecuted in Europe, they just want to make a buck. Why don’t they change things back home instead of invading here?”
Surely immigration is a problem, and surely these gangs threatening to disrupt such a rally is deplorable, but it would do a great disservice to the memory of our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents to assume that every illegal immigrant is simply a scam artist.

I have nothing against immigrants who are decent, honest and hard woking. But, the ones that just hang out in the street all day and ogle at, and harass women should not be allowed in Lakewood or any where else. This country is made up of immigrants from all over the world except for native Americans (known as Indians). So no one is better than someone else. But, somehow the low lifes and criminal elements should be kept out.

Anyone here commenting that actually live in Lakewood ? I used to and there is a BIG problem. I have nothing against people looking for a better place to live but not our expense. One night there was a call for some one that was hit over the head with a bat. This was in retaliation for a shooting. This was done by rival gangs. All the members that we dealt with were Illegals. When the illegals go to the hospital they have no insurance. Who ends up paying for it ? The tax payer. Since they don’t have insurance they go to the ER for a soar throat. There are many other stories to be told. They hurt the quality of life in Lakewood. I think part of the problem is that a lot of business’s there hire illegals because of cheap labor. so in essence people support business’s that hire people whom make us trouble. Again I am not against people coming to the US for a better life but not at the expense of us living there.

I am amazed that Mayor Coles could say he wouldn’t allow police to protect the citizens of Lakewood during a peaceful protest from dangerous criminals living in our town.If we were to organize a march against drugs and crime,would we be on our own as well?When his Strand Theatre and his Baseball Stadium have events,needing police services,is there money for overtime then?Ray Coles is a poor representative of this town.He has proven time after time that he only cares about what he needs for himself,his friends,and whatever he needs to bribe the Vaad with to stay in power.It’s time for a change.Anyone got the guts?

My name is diane reaves, and it was my rally that was offered no protection. I wanted to say that I am thankful for any who have supported the mere notion that I was entitled to police protection for the rally. I was so disappointed and very upset that I was not, without, as I was told, having to PAY for that protection!
Facing the horrible fact that Lakewood has become a sanctuary city – and those in Mexico know it already, many are promised jobs here before they ever cross that border illegally – we have to stick together and do something about it. Even the mere numbers are always different – When I ask someone in power, exactly how many illegal aliens we have here; I get three different answers.
I too am not a racist. I am just sick of being afraid of the huge problem with gangs; not being able to walk down Clifton Avenue without being harassed by illegals who apparently aren’t working, but have time to hang out and drink; tire of my neighborhood getting worse and worse. I’ve been here for over a decade. Nothing is the same.
We have homeless gang members, as well as, others who have taken over parts of the railroad track area off of RT. 88; even when the police are called back there, they are required to wear RIOT gear folks, thats how dangerous it is back there.
What about when work runs out for all these tens of thousands of illegals? When then? What do you think they will do when they don’t have any money? Yup, they will start robbing folks.
Have any of you been to our “public” schools lately? They are almost completely filled to the brim with illegal children. I call them illegal because I don’t buy the whole anchor baby syndrome either. The Constitutional amendment was originally written to include babies born from SLAVES – not babies born from those who enter our gates illegally! If their parents are not citizens in “good standing” then their children are NOT US citizens; how much clearer can it be? Yet so many alter our laws to fit their behavior and habit of breaking our laws.
Last night during the township meeting; we were told that FINALLY the police department would be utilizing the 287g program – only one HUGE flaw…They have only trained ONE detective. I was so mad I was seeing red! With a sea of over 25,000 illegals, do you think ONE officer with federal training to check the status of every single illegal pulled over or arrested is enough?! Its not even close…
I have great grandparents who had to flee Poland because of the hatred against them for being Jewish. They did so LEGALLY and I can prove it, I have the documentation from Ellis Island! They came here, worked hard, paid their taxes, were citizens, and never joined a gang; never sold drugs, never disobeyed the laws of the land; they taught us that we needed to respect police officers, learn English, and work hard. I am thankful to all they did and sacrificed so that I can be a citizen, and so can my children.
I was also very ashamed that mayor Coles refused to offer any further protection – downright ashamed! I’m disappointed that I simply don’t merit that kind of protection – Its not fair, as some have pointed out, that when theres a ball game, there is extra help always on hand.
I am organizing another rally – but it won’t be in Lakewood – I will have it in a town nearby that won’t tolerate such – I would be honored to have any of you attend it as well.
Lets us do well to remember; this has nothing to do with race – nothing to do with students who have overstayed their VISA’s – it has to do with the SCREENING process – to determine if the person entering has serious health conditions; or is a wanted FELON –
What happened in Newark is disgraceful – to think that killer raped a five year old little angel, and was free on $5,000 bail is sick! He was a pig to that little girl, she may never be able to be a mom because of the damage he did to that little baby. Look, the laws are there for many reasons; we cannot compare the laws of yesterday with the laws of today; the needs changed every new decade and century we enter into.
I simply feel that there are many nations on this planet that are poor – surely we cannot take all of them in, can we? So we have to devise ways to allow some to enter our gates and help them to achieve the American dream. People from all over the world are willing to risk their very lives to come here. Why? Because they feel its the best place in the world to live. Whether or not thats true is up to the individual. If I were in Mexico and my family was starving, I would leave too! But instead of taking ten years and hiding in the shadows of America; I would have used that ten years to do so legally – thereby giving no one a chance to deport me for being a lawbreaker. Its just not fair if millions of folks wait in line; pay extreme amounts of money, and then somebody else jumps the line! Is that fair?! Are you telling me you don’t mind after standing in line with your entire family to see a show, and someone comes along and cuts in front of you. Thats okay with you? Lets be honest here. You cannot compare someone who had ancestors enter our gates in the 1930’s with someone trying to enter in 2007. Theres just to many differences. Its not a fair comparison.
And I NEVER eat out! Thats right, never! I prepare everything my family eats. Even my own bread! I have NEVER had a babysitter, thats right, NEVER! I cut my own grass, wash my own car and have NEVER hired cheap, illegal employees. I do everything myself – And I am educated and work myself outside of the home as well. A mexican immigrant is one who has arrived legally and followed all the laws everyone else has to follow – otherwise, they are merely mexican illegal immigrants. Huge difference.
I’m sick of schools and such catering to them. Learn English, its our national language!! Not spanish! If I dared to travel to Italy, I best know how to speak Italian! And I don’t care if they may have some who speak English there either. I would know that their national language is Italian – if you don’t know the language you should learn the language.
Don’t hide a bank robber in your home folks; its the same thing. Why are we making exceptions for some laws being broken and not others? It makes no sense. But if you live in Mexico and are trying to hide as an illegal they will hunt you down, jail you and then deport you! This summer a black man, who happened to be there working LEGALLY, was shot and killed, while he sat eating his lunch at a construction site, in Mexico. Oh, our mistake! They found out after he was dead, he had a right to be there!! They kill first ask questions later – if you are not there LEGALLY you cannot work there, and they don’t care if your starving!
And you are not allowed to have rallies there either, its against the law of Mexico. So I’m not going to feel sorry for any who come here and think its okay to break the laws of my home country either.
