World War I: Allied ammonal mines underneath German trenches in Mesen Ridge are detonated, killing 10,000 German troops.
1914 – The first vessel passes through the locks of the Panama Canal.
1494 – Spain and Portugal sign the Treaty of Tordesillas which divides the New World between the two countries.
