The following are two news stories published Friday morning by NBC New York. Both involve serious crimes by children under the age of 10.
Police in New Rochelle say a 10-year-old boy has been arrested on a felony robbery charge after violently mugging another child.
Detective Capt. Joseph Schaller says the victim, who’s also 10, was punched three times in the face when he refused to give up his money — about $7.
Police said Thursday that the attacker also threatened to `’poke” the victim with a knife, although no weapon was found.
The case will be heard in Family Court.
An 8-year-old boy and his father are facing gun charges after the youngster brought a loaded handgun to a Queens elementary school Thursday and sold it to a classmate for $3, police said.
The weapon was discovered when the second boy brought the gun home and showed it to his mom, police said. The mom rushed to PS 107 in Flushing to report what happened and school officials called police.
The father of the boy who brought the loaded gun to school admitted to detectives that he owned the Taurus 9 mm, which he bought 10 years ago for protection, authorities said. Both the father, a 56-year-old Queens man, and his 8-year-old son will be charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
The boy who bought the gun for $3 is not being charged. Investigators believe the boy thought he was buying a toy gun, according to a source.
The 8-year-old busted on the gun charge will be released to a family member and his case will be heard in family court. The father will remain in custody and be arraigned sometime Friday.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Education would not comment.
“The school notified the NYPD and now it’s a police matter,” said spokeswoman Margie Feinberg.

It is fools like the father in this story (who had an child-accessible, LOADED gun) that make responsible gun owners look bad.
People should know that the vast majority of gun owners ARE responsible people whose guns are kept where they are NOT accessible to children, and with ammunition kept in a seperate non-accessible location.

I would only add that parents who own firearms should take their children for a short but graphically information trip to a shooting range to demonstrate to them, with the aid of a paper target, the potentially fatal harm a firearm can cause to a human being. I did that with all four of our children when they were four years old, and B”H there has never been a firearms accident in our home in 28 years. They’re all grown now, with a healthy respect for firearms and a solid grounding in gun safety.
