929 – NYC Gets New Area Code Starting Saturday

Ladies and gentlemen, start your speed dials: The city debuts its sixth area code Saturday.

As any dialed-in New York knows, the 929 area code will cover new customers in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island – Manhattan will be unaffected.

Existing customers who add a line or move their service could also receive the new digits, which join the existing 212, 347, 646, 718 and 917 area codes.

The addition was necessary to keep up with New Yorkers’ voracious appetite for phone service, as the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) warned the 718 and 347 codes will run out of numbers next year.

Verizon officials expect a smooth transition once the 929 lines begin operating. The most important news for customers: Local calls will remain local calls despite the new area code, and the price of a local call will not increase.
