According to a report in the Times Herald Record, a 3-year-old child playing with matches has burned down a bungalow at Rosenzweig Cottages in Swan Lake. The Swan Lake fire department received the call last night and upon arrival found the bungalow up in flames. The Sullivan County Sheriff Department has told the Record that the child set the mattress on fire while playing with matches.

sad, but thankfully it seems that nobody was hurt. always keep matches out of childrens reach. all children all ages.
WHERE DID THIS CHILD FIND SUCH MATCHES TO BE PLAYING WITH? B”H NOONE WAS INJURED. WE MUST SUPERVISE OUR CHILDREN SO NO OTHER ACCIDENTS SUCH AS THIS OCCUR.
the headline misleads you to believe it was done on purpose
Children MUST ALWAYS be watched and properly supervised, whether in the city or anywhere else! you just can’t let your guard down!! How could anyone leave matches accessible to a young child! Boruch Hashem,no one got hurt! That is a miracle we can be grateful for. It must have been a frightening experience for everyone at the bungalow colony, especially all the children there.
3 YEARS OLD???? I find that hard to believe. I’m thinking it may have been an older child who then blamed it on his younger brother/sister. (Doesn’t say anywhere gender of child) I think it’s a bit difficult for a 3 yr. old to strike a match.
If in fact it was a 3 yr. old, this incident just goes to show you, once the child can understand what it is you are telling him/her, it is never too early to teach your kids fire safety. I am proud to say that my 5 yr. old has brought to me a book of matches she found in our backyard (left behind by a contractor).
Check out your local Judaica store, for there is a wonderful jewish Safety video on the market (highly recommended & endorsed by Hatzolah) which covers many safety topics. May we never hear of such stories again.
I’ve been in the country where mothers rely on one mother to keep an eye and ear on many bungalows, while they go to Kinos, or a Shiur, and in the meantime the worst tragedies can happen.

My three year old had at one point lit off matches, so I don’t hink it’s farfetched. It takes just a little bit of persistence (which most children have) to light one up.
Don’t worry, he’s learnt his lesson to never play with them again.
super intelligent comments here, after some major brainstorming I think perhaps the moral of the story is that 3 year olds shouldnt be playing with matches, because they might start a fire
its very possible that the child in question playing with matches was older then 3 years old but the parents not wanting to get an older child in trouble blamed it on the 3 year old
This is not related to this thread, but one subscriber mentioned ‘fire safety’, and I wanted to alert the public that a couple of years back, lucite silver-tray-protectors were being sold at silver stores since the wax/oil drippings could be cleaned easier from lucite than silver. The fire department paid visits to a lot of silver stores , urging them to take these lucite inserts off the market, as they are flammable. In case anyone uses one of these they should check out its safety. Thanks for reading.
I’m so glad everyone learned from this story not to give children matches to play with. Without this story, who would’ve known!!
How many more comments must we read, “Children must be supervised,” “Don’t give children matches.”
However, the discussion about parents feeling that in a bungalow colony they can just let their kids go unsupervised is certainly a valid point, something which is not always as obvious as not handing a child a kitchen knife to play with.
does insurance cover child fires?
everything in that statement is hersey which is
not acceptable ,
If only you all would have seen what I have seen in the last month in the Borscht Belt. Do parents watch their children anymore?
