RA”E is known to not have been an enemy of the Chassidim, though he never publicly endorsed them either. (There are stories that his son tore Kriya when R’ Leibele became a Chassid, but none of those are sourced anywhere near the actual Ma’aseh and were probably made up well after everyone involved had passed away.) But Feif’s point stands, even if RA”E is a poor example. Just replace him with the GR”A and the point is perfect.
