Unattended Suitcase Outside Passaic Pizzeria Leads To Bomb Squad Investigation

The presence of an unattended black suitcase on a city sidewalk prompted police Saturday night to evacuate some local businesses, though it turned out the suitcase contained only clothes and a cookbook.

Passaic Police Detective Andy White said the owner of Jerusalem Pizza at 233 Main Ave. called police about the suitcase because he didn’t see anyone leave outside his establishment and was concerned.

Police evacuated some nearby businesses and the city fire department contacted the Passaic County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad, said White, which likely X-rayed the suitcase to determine the contents. Bomb squad officers then blasted the suitcase open and found the clothes and cookbook.

On Sunday, the pizzeria owner notified Passaic Detective Sgt. Roy Bordamonte that he received a call from a man who asked if he had left his suitcase outside the restaurant. The man said he lived in Manhattan and had spent the weekend with a friend in town and forgot the suitcase. The man was able to identify the contents, White said.
