Huckabee Says Obama Grew Up In Kenya

Questions about President Obama’s citizenship won’t die.

This time, the claim comes, surprisingly, from a prominent Republican and possible Obama challenger: Mike Huckabee.

The former Arkansas governor and 2008 presidential candidate told a New York City radio station that Obama’s foreign policy stems from his “having grown up in Kenya,” once a colony of Great Britain.

Citing “his perspective as growing up in Kenya with a Kenyan father and grandfather,” Huckabee said Obama “probably grew up hearing that the British were a bunch of imperialists who persecuted his grandfather.” Huckabee cited the Mau Mau uprising against the British, which included the detention of Obama’s grandfather.

Obama’s father was Kenyan, but the president was born in Hawaii in 1961. Obama has said he didn’t visit Kenya until 1987.

Huckabee’s comment is startling because in recent weeks he has criticized the so-called “birther” movement as erroneous and damaging to the Republican Party.

  1. So Huckafony made a mistake. Big deal. Besides it was Indonesia anyway.

The libs do what they are good at doing, instead of dealing with an issue, they pick a point of it to invalidate the entire argument.

  2. As one of Obama’s biggest critics, I tell people (especially in the frum world) not to focus on his birthplace as the main issue, there are many bigger problems with his policies that we should be criticizing.

  3. No. 2 writes, in part: “The libs do what they are good at doing, instead of dealing with an issue, they pick a point of it to invalidate the entire argument.”

You have, by the foregoing sentence, exactly described the point of the birthers’ insistence that Mr. Obama was not lawfully elected as president of the United States. The persistent allegation that Mr. Obama is not the lawful president of the US (as No. 1 insists) is a ruse to turn public discussion of the serious issues facing the federal government, like the need for improved financial regulation, improved health care financing, and stimulus for a weak economy that cannot provide employment for all those who want it. Instead of dealing with these issues, Mr. Obama’s opponents would rather say that he is not really the president.

Get used to it – Barak Hussein Obama is president of the United States. In fact, get very used to it, as I expect he will hold that job until 2017.

  4. As Mark Levin stated, the liberals love to pick on a gaffe to delegitimize any conservative. They know where Huckabee stands on the issue, yet they’ll seek to destroy anyone that says the truth. They won’t cover the hate language in Wisconsin, but they will point out some loathing at Tea Party protests. They ignore dead threats from a Democratic Rep. but make a ruckus over graphics that Sarah Palin used. Obama should answer the questions; it is indeed suspicious.

  5. What is the problem? So the wording was not exact, but the point was dead on.

I have heard others speak about Obama’s father’s distinctly Kenyan influence.

It has been said to be why Obama is unAmerican to it’s ally, Israel. As to why Obama gave the Queen of England a ridiculous, undignitary iPod. As to why he favors arab concerns before American concerns.

It is because Obama shares his father’s Kenyan view that Israel, Britain, and America are Colonial evils.

  6. nfgo3,

What you’ve written is scary. And accurate.

By the way, it is a problem that the democratic process unfolded in the last election cycle without the candidate–now incumbent–ever producing a regular, plain, common, everyday birth certificate, just like every other presidential candidate has always done and just like every American in good standing can easily do. Our collective neglect to look into the matter through to a factual resolution is an important defect in our “government of the people, for the people, by the people” ethic, and reveals something that is worrying about the strength of our core commitment to being a “rule of law” state. So, it’s not some minor side show that pesky opponents of the Obama administration raise solely as a diversion from the “real issues”.

But having said all of that, I do agree that you’re spot-on in your observation that Obama’s political opponents have not effectively raised the most important issues of the day, and the topics over which Obama and the Republicans bicker these days are the details of how to attack the least important matters affecting our big picture. Ours is the world’s only superpower, the country that lead and largely accomplished the military defeat of the Axis powers only a few decades ago. And yet today much weaker existential enemies than the Nazis are being allowed to equip themselves with the doomsday weaponry with which to vanquish us. “There is no military solution”, our brilliant commander-in-chief tells us, to the mounting nuclear threat from Iran, or to the growing nuclear threat from backwards little North Korea. The US Army who could in 1945 defang and defeat cutting edge enemies like Japan and Germany has, with 60 years of continued technological advancement, lost its ability to successfully bring down minor third world fiefdoms, we are to believe. And the Republicans are just as guilty, because they too have taken the eyes off the ball in order to better squabble over relatively insignificant health care bills. We’re all going to need a lot of health care if our real problems aren’t addressed by stopping nuclear proliferation amongst the very psychopaths most committed to detonating WMD on our soil.

    Sorry for being so long-winded.

  7. Dave, this is no minor gaffe, but an entire theory based on something that is objectively false. Obama grew up in Hawaii and Indonesia, not Kenya, and had little if any contact with his biological father’s family. There is NO dispute about that.

  8. 4) Hamakom Yerachaym if he is CHV reelected president in 2012. As it stands now, from what I see in with the people I deal with, including people of race, Obama will get beaten like a rented mule. After the Union leadership and brothers vos huben nisht kayn saychil tzi trachtin fahr zich alayn, he has very little support out there.

  9. No. 9: Are you more factually accurate, and is your reasoning more sound, when you comment in Hebrew/Yiddish/Yeshivish than when you comment in English?

And speaking of English, please explain what “people of race” means. And while you’re at it, could you explain what you meant by the term “Union leadership” – were you talking about (i) President Lincoln and General Grant, or (ii) the current leaders of the AFL-CIO, National Education Association, or the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, who are union leaders, not leaders of the Union.
