Report: Security Lapses at Newark Liberty Airport

Transportation Security Administration officials have revealed a series of security lapses at Newark Liberty International Airport, according to a Star-Ledger report on NJ.com.

In one incident, a knife made it past the checkpoint in a carry-on. In another, two passengers walked off without clearing the full-body scan.

And in a bizarre incident, a dead dog made it onto a plane without being screened.

The Star-Ledger reported that these were among five security lapses at the airport in a month.

“No one involved in security in this country should be surprised that only five times they had a lapse in the last month,” security expert Isaac Yeffet told Fox 5 news. “Show me one good thing the TSA did since they took over.”

These incidents happened just as the TSA’s regional director held a meeting to discuss how improve security at the airport.

Ever since a New Jersey man slipped by screeners to give his girlfriend a goodbye kiss back in January 2010, the TSA has hired more screeners and implemented the body scans.

In its 2012 budget proposal, the TSA wants to hire more screeners.

“TSA at Newark is currently hosting a peer team comprised of security managers and supervisors from other airports,” said Ann Davis, a TSA spokesperson, in a statement. “It is routine for airports to conduct site visits for the purpose of reviewing airport-specific security procedures and share ideas and best practices. TSA believes it’s important for our managers and supervisors to share their knowledge and expertise with their colleagues to both enhance security and provide learning opportunities for our workforce.”

  1. Of course there are security lapses at Newark Airport. You ever try asking someone a simple question there? They point you to the guy in the red jacket who points you to the lady in the blue suit who tells you to walk all the way down a corridor and ask someone at an abandoned counter…etc. No one knows what they are doing there. They are just clocking time for pay; that’s all.
