Commuter Ferry Catches Fire Near George Washington Bridge

A fire has been extinguished aboard a commuter ferry on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River.

Coast Guard spokesman Charles Rowe says the New York Waterway vessel Moira Smith was carrying 25 passengers and two crew members. Rowe says there are no reports of injuries.

NorthJersey.com reports the following:

A New York Waterway ferry boat engine overheated Wednesday morning, sending one person to the hospital with minor smoke inhalation, authorities said.

No one was seriously injured in the fire, police said. About 25 passengers and two crew members were onboard when the New York-bound boat, Moira Smith, left Edgewater at 9:30 a.m.

About five minutes into the trip, an engine overheated and started smoking. The crew shut down the engine, dropped the anchor and called for help, said Pat Smith, a Waterway spokesman.

A second ferry towed the boat  to Edgewate where passengers were brought onshore and most  were transferred to another boat, Smith said. One person was taken to Englewood Hospital with minor smoke inhalation, said hospital spokeswoman Maria Margiotta.

Another pregnant passenger did not go to the hospital, but planned to go to her doctor, Margiotta said.

The rest of the passengers went on to New York, “20 minutes late, that’s all,” Smith said.

The fire began when the boat was 30 yards  off the shore, police said. Fire department boats responded and extinguished the fire.

The Moira Smith will be escorted to the New York Waterway terminal in Weehawken, police said.
