Yeshiva Expansion Proposal Under Fire in Cortlandt

(From The Journal News:) Community opposition is mounting against a yeshiva aiming to upgrade and modernize its operation at 141 Furnace Woods Road, so the school’s enrollment could go from 210 to 250.

A large crowd turned out at the Town Hall meeting, a petition with 300 names has been circulating and dozens of letters have been generated by opponents of a plan by Yeshiva Ohr Hameir to rehabilitate its operation and build housing to accommodate about 50 more students.

Neighbors of the secondary school have said it has been a bad neighbor through the years, citing substandard maintenance and traffic problems associated with Ohr Hameir, and they say the proposed construction is likely to cause more problems for the community at large.

Representatives of the school, meanwhile, say they are looking to improve local relations and fix the site to make it more appealing to the community. They note the law is on their side.

Neighbors have complained that students walk on the narrow road in front of the school in complete disregard for traffic, and local residents have bristled over what they called visual blight at school grounds.

Building inspectors uncovered many violations at the school this year, including fire-code violations and significant structural problems.

Neighbors also cited numerous false-alarm calls and service calls to the Fire Department.

A legal dispute as to how and when the yeshiva allowed students to board there, and whether that practice was officially authorized, is central to the case. Yeshiva Ohr Hameir representatives insist the town had authorized the dormitories and cite a record of building permits that have been issued.

  1. Its a great Yeshiva we need more such yeshivos or at least to support their expansion to accomodate more bachurim. The Rosh Yeshiva is as devoted as is humanly possible & then some.

  2. Some time these ‘neighborly’ complaints are unfounded. Nevertheless it behooves these talmidim and the hanhala of the yeshiva to act with the utmost respect to these people who’s town it is.

  3. This Is the great Yeshiva in Peekskill NY that i was so lucky to attend.
The story is that the yeshivah wants to get a sewer system extension done and the locals believe a sewer system will cause more people to move in and make it less suburban.

The false alarms of the fire department are mostly caused by a leaky roof and the fire alarm gets tripped by a soaked sensor

we should stand behind this yeshivah all the way

besides that the talmidim treat the town with much respect the claim is comlpetly false as you will say so yourself.

    some of the claims

-the students come back drunk late friday night from manhattan after hangging out at the bars there.

-the rabbeyim bring packages from brooklyn containing drugs

    -and so on
personal note : the yeshiva is one of the most amazing top noch yeshivas in america
headed by the most devoted rosh yeshiva

YW Editor Responds: YW was unaware that this was Peekskill Yeshiva, and if you would have looked carefully before the article starts it says “From the Journal News”.

If the Yeshiva would like to counter the Journal News, kindly have the yeshiva email us with all the facts & we will be more thank happy to post it.

  6. I live in the Town of Cortlandt, not far from the Yeshiva. I am Jewish, an attorney and supportive of the Yeshiva’s goals and town application.

If the Yeshiva or its existing attorney wants to contact me for assistance (or even keep me in the loop about activity on this issue), I can be contacted at [email protected]
