The New York City Police Department is using less lethal force as it protects and serves.
With eight people shot and killed by officers in 2010, the year marked the fewest fatal police shootings since the department started keeping records in 1971.
The total was down from 12 in 2009, and under the previous low of nine shot and killed in 2005.
Sixteen others were wounded in by police gunfire, also a record low.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly credits police training and restraint for the low number of shooting deaths.

Actually, I don’t think there is anything to be proud of. The “restraint” of police officers powers ruines the ability of the force to stop crime. The idea that any time an officer draws a weapon an investigation is opened is the indirect cause of many murders!
