there are a variety of reasons to dress in the manner of the group to which you belong . no one said it means “im better than you”
interestingly, when Rabbi dr dovid gottlieb became o Chosid of the Bostoner Rebbe, the Rebbe told him he must wait 8 years before wearing the Chassidic garb. i dont know his reason for sure but i believe from what i heard 3rd hand is that it was to be certain that Rabbi Gottlieb was not joining because of a love of the externalities of the life of a Chosid.
