Hungary: New Memorial for Jewish Children Erected

hol cover3.jpgA memorial was erected recently to commemorate Jewish children from the city who were killed in Auschwitz-Birkenau during the Second World War. The names of 381 children are engraved in the granite column, which was erected in the yard of the former Jewish elementary school near the synagogue.  “So many silent names, so many loud charges, so many witnesses and lessons,” said retired National Head Rabbi József Schweitzer in his memorial speech.

Tamás Szekeres, rector of the István Széchenyi University of Győr, said “every child has a right to adult life and then a dignified goodbye,” and this is what people who view the memorial should remember.
