very few people are hurt by the winds of a hurricane, presuming that they stay inside during the whole thing, and don’t make the mistake of going outside during the eye.

Many hurricane injuries come from getting hit by flying objects that are sent speeding aloft by the wins, so your patio furniture, home siding, branches of trees become deadly objects. But you can avoid these mostly just by staying in your home. If you don’t feel safe at home, go to a shelter such as the New Orleans Superdome or a local school.

Much more damage is done by the storm surge, so if you live near the shore, move inland or listen to the radio very carefully for evacuation procedures. Don’t ignore them.

Hurricanes do much property damage, but in the US they kill very few people. Hot weather, for instance, is a much more deadly form of weather, killing 100s of times more people than hurricanes.

I’ve been through four or five in the New York and Boston area, starting with the famous Jewish hurricane, Hurricane (Queen) Esther in 1961. The house shakes, the windows shake, it rains a lot, lots of debris and witches on broomsticks fly by your window, then it gets real quiet for a while (the eye of the storm) and then the storm starts again with great violence. The witches and patio furniture fly in the opposite direction.

My advice: unless you’re on the coast and under an evacuation order, just sit back and enjoy it, it’s a wonder to behold.

During the last heat wave, at least five people died of weather-related causes in Brooklyn alone.

So, don’t be scared. You survived the deadly hot weather, a hurricane should seem like a walk in the park.
