1000+ Flights Cancelled, Amtrak Stops Trains, Inter-State Bus Routs Cancelled

New York City airports canceled more than 1,000 flights by noon on Sunday even though only about 2 of the expected 18 inches had fallen by then. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said that it anticipated many more cancellations throughout the day as the storm intensified into the evening. Delta had canceled 850 flights from the Carolinas to Boston, and American Airlines said that it was canceling most flights out of the three New York airports after 3 p.m. US Airways said it had canceled 567 flights Sunday, the majority in the Northeast.

Amtrak’s service between Washington and New York was not affected, but officials canceled all trains between New York and Boston after about 5 p.m.

Most low-cost bus carriers canceled their routes between Washington and Boston. Megabus canceled its Sunday service in New York, Philadelphia and Washington. Boltbus canceled service on all routes after 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, and on all routes Monday. DC2NY canceled its Sunday evening schedules. David Wang, the owner of Eastern Travel, said all buses departing from New York and Washington were also canceled Sunday and travelers could face more delays on Monday.

Already by Sunday afternoon, about 400 flights had been canceled at Philadelphia International Airport, with more expected, said spokeswoman Victoria Lupica.

At John F. Kennedy International Airport, the flight boards inside Terminal 8 displayed a stream of yellow cancellation notices by about 1:45 p.m. Of 60 flights listed at one point, only six claimed to be “on time.”

  1. It is not only beautiful. Rabbi Avigdor Miller explained how Hashem designed it for functionality. The Gemara states that a snow is better than five rains – because the water drains off slowly and gradually nourishes the ground. “Hanosain sheleg katzemer,” we say every day – He gives snow like wool – because, like wool, which has air pockets to keep the wearer warm, the snow piles up high and traps air which keeps the ground, and all its denizens warm in the cold weather. Earthworms are needed to till the earth, and they mustn’t freeze. Rabbits play under the snow! Hashem also designed the snow as white, so it should reflect the sunlight and thus melt more slowly – in some places not until the springtime. And, wonder of wonders, this blanket that protects the earth only falls where it is needed! – where it is cold enough for the earth to require such a blanket! In addition, I would add, the whiteness of the snow magnifies the available light on the long winter nights so we can see where we are going! And perhaps the greatest neis is that, the reason the snow performs this wonderful function is because the snowflakes pile up in a hexagonal crystal pattern (which allows the air to be trapped inside), because the H2O molecule that comprises it have the two hydrogren atoms pointing out from the oxygen at almost exactly a 120 degree angle, forming the sides of the hexagonal crystal. So we learn the greatness and wisdom and kindness of HaKodosh Boruch Hu by studying this wonderful creation of His.
