A pilot program is underway that allows customers of Access-a-Ride to use yellow cabs to get where they’re going.
Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman and CEO Jay Walder and Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the 90-day program Wednesday, which aims to reduce costs and improve service.
Under the program, Access-a-Ride customers will use a pre-paid debit card to pay for taxi service on regularly scheduled, pre-planned trips.
Bloomberg says doing so will help cut costs for the city.
“While users only pay $2.25 per ride, a single trip is nearly $50, and it’s the taxpayers that are picking up the tab. At $50, an Access-a-Ride trip is nearly three times the cost of an average ride in a taxi, which is currently around $15,” said the mayor.
The MTA anticipates saving up to $200,000 a month.
Only 400 Access-a-Ride users are taking part in the program.
