NYC Public Advocate Bill de Blasio said the following after the arrests of the suspects in the recent anti-semitic hate crimes in Williamsburg:
“I commend the 90th precinct under the leadership of Deputy Inspector Michael M. Kemper for swiftly apprehending the suspects that have allegedly been terrorizing the Williamsburg community. The NYPD Hate Crime Task Force in particular has demonstrated great commitment and diligence in investigating these bias incidents. Credit also belongs to the Williamsburg Shomrim Safety Patrol which has worked to assist the authorities in their work. The clearest condemnation of intolerance is the swift application of justice against those who attack any person on the basis of their religion, race or background.”
Statement from Congressman Ed. Towns:
“Nothing is more satisfying than knowing suspects have been quickly apprehended in the hate crimes that have recently held the Williamsburg community hostage. I would like to commend the 90th Precinct’s Deputy Inspector Michael M. Kemper, as well the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force in spearheading the efforts that have produced these dramatic results. I also want to thank the Williamsburg Shomrim Safety Patrol that helped assist in these arrests. The swift work by New York’s Finest and volunteer public safety patrols sends a clear message that we have a zero tolerance policy against anyone who attacks a person based upon their religion, race or ethnicity.”
Statement By Councilmember Stephen Levin
I would like to take this opportunity to call attention to two instances of assault in the South Williamsburg community, one occurring on Thanksgiving Day and one occurring just this past Sunday evening. In both instances, a person of the Chasidic Jewish community was viciously assaulted for no apparent reason, and in one of the instances, anti-Semitic statements were spewed while the assailants were beating the victim and his religious garments were torn.
After Sunday’s assault, the Shomrim community patrol and the 90th Precinct apprehended the assailants, and upon extensive interviews, charged two young men with both assaults and another charge of harassment regarding another recent incident targeting another Chasidic Jewish individual.
I want to recognize the Shomrim community patrol, the 90th Precinct and its CO Michael Kemper, Brooklyn North and its Chief Gerald Nelson, the NYPD Hate Crimes Unit, UJO of Williamsburg, and Speaker Christine Quinn for their collective efforts to publicize these incidents and apprehend these assailants.
