I think that it really depends on you as a couple and where you want to be in life. If you, like other posters here, see tv as strictly asur or if you want to get to the level that you think of it as asur, then do not get one.
However, if you plan not to get one just because of what your friends would think (or some other similar reason), then you do will find other ways to watch what you want anyway. As someone pointed out (I)”Anything you get on tv you could probably get on the internet.”(I) That is entirely true. I used to be friends with a couple who bragged about how they do not own a tv even though they both grew up with it. Then, they would discuss with us all the latest shows. When we finally asked them how they know what is going on they answered “well…we watch it online”.
In my home we allow our 3 year old to watch several shows that we deem appropriate. Guess what? He knew his ABCs, colors, how to count and many other basic things way before most of the other kids his age in our shul.
Now, I am not saying that it is for everyone. What I am saying is that you should know where you are holding and where you want to be instead of where others in this forum think you should be
