A secret history of US government World War II-era operations has concluded that US intelligence services created a ‘safe haven’ in the United States for German Nazis and their collaborators The New York Times reported late on Saturday.
The newspaper said the 600-page report it had obtained described decades of clashes with other nations over war criminals held in the United States and abroad.
The report cites help that CIA officials provided in 1954 to Otto Von Bolschwing, an associate of Adolph Eichmann. Bolschwing, who had helped develop the initial plans ‘to purge Germany of the Jews’, later worked for the CIA in the United States, according to the report.
In a series of memos, Central Intelligence Agency officials debated what to do if Von Bolschwing were confronted about his past – whether to deny any Nazi affiliation or ‘explain it away on the basis of extenuating circumstances,’ the paper noted.
After learning of Von Bolschwing’s Nazi ties, the Justice Department sought to deport him in 1981, but he died that year at age 72, The Times pointed out.
The report also examines the case of Arthur Rudolph, a Nazi scientist who ran the Mittelwerk munitions factory in Germany, the paper said. He was brought to the United States in 1945 for his rocket-making expertise under ‘Operation Paperclip,’ a US program that recruited scientists who had worked in Nazi Germany. Rudolph has been honoured by Nasa and is credited as the father of the US Saturn V rocket.

Yes, it is despicable that the US turned away the Jews on the St. Louis, but the law then did not permit them to be admitted — the anti-immigration zealots (whose spiritual descendents sometimes comment here on YWN) had slammed the door shut on immigration in 1924 with passage of the Johnson-Reed Act. US officials tried to get Cuba to accept them but failed; several European countries — the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, and France — did finally accept them after US pressure. Had Roosevelt allowed the refugees into America he probably would have been impeached and removed from office. Comparing Roosevelt to Hitler is a desecration of the memory of Hitler’s victims.
The NY Times just found this out? It became public years ago.
This is a חידוש? The US openly recruited Germans who could help the US, especially in the areas of rocket science (in which the Germans were well ahead of American scientists), and for spies to be “assets” in the cold war. This isn’t a secret, and is probably justifiable since many of them would have ended up working for the Soviet Union (in all fairness, there wasn’t a lot of “companies” making long range ballistic rockers back then).
The word “safe haven” implies that any “Nazi” who showed up would get assistance – which no one claims to be the case.

The Rembrandt of Marten Looten hangs in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The Gainsborough of Christie purchased in 1938 is at The Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
