Members of law enforcement and Lumberland’s volunteer fire departments and their families attended a Memorial Day barbecue given in their honor by Chai Lifeline, the organization that runs Camp Simcha in Glen Spey, NY.
“We truly are the beneficiaries of the constabulary and the Fire Department,” said Abe Kunstlinger, Camp Simcha’s director. “The picnic is one way that we can show our gratitude for their commitment and sacrifice.”
The guests played miniature golf, enjoyed the lake, climbed on playground equipment and toured the campground. Veteran magician Ben Cohen entertained the group before they sat down to traditional barbecue fare.
“Camp Simcha is particularly indebted to area firefighters and police,” operations director Benzion Brown said. “When our dining room was destroyed by fire six years ago, the Lumberland Fire Department was first on the scene and kept the fire from spreading. Their hard work was a demonstration of the lengths that people will go to help others and helped sustain our campers’ spirits on a very difficult day.”
“Like everyone who lives in this area, we are thankful that Lumberland’s police and fire departments are looking out for all of us,” said Rabbi Simcha Scholar, the executive vice president of Chai Lifeline.
