NYC Murder Rate Reportedly Rises 16 Percent Since Last Year

The city’s murder rate is on pace to surpass last year’s record low.

Numbers obtained by the Associated Press show the city recorded 464 homicides through Thursday, a 16 percent jump from the 400 reported at the same time in 2009.

With seven weeks left before the new year, the total is just seven shy of the 471 recorded last year.

Police officials tell the AP the increase is a concern, but not alarming when compared to 20 years ago, when the city had a record 2,245 homicides.

They say even if the current pace holds, the city’s murder total would still be the third-lowest since record keeping began in 1962.

  1. “… The murder rate is on pace to SURPASS…” YWN editor: please! “Surpass” means to go beyond in a positive/good way. The word here should be “exceed”.

  2. Both of you yutzes are missing the entire point and instead are dwelling on minutiae. If we had a death penalty in New York State, then we wouldn’t be hearing such news. But, don’t expect that to happen with Andrew Cuomo.
