A Chilean miner will go from running underground to running through the streets of New York.
A spokesperson for New York Road Runners says Edison Peña will take part in the ING New York City Marathon this Sunday.
The 34-year-old from Chile ran up to five miles a day to keep his body and mind sharp during the 69 days he and 32 others were trapped in a mine.
The Road Runners CEO Mary Wittenberg said Peña embodies the inspiration and perseverance the marathon represents.
She said he “demonstrated how running can play an important role in our physical and emotional well-being under any circumstances.”
