Off-Duty NYPD Officer Foils Brooklyn Armed Robbery

Police are searching for a Brooklyn teen who exchanged gunfire with an off-duty police officer last night while attempting to rob a beauty salon.

Police say Winston Cox, 19, entered Sabine’s Hallway Beauty Salon in Clinton Hill around 6:30 p.m. where he displayed a gun and demanded money.

That’s when Feris Jones, 50, identified herself as a New York City Police Department officer and ordered Cox to drop his gun.

Cox opened fire but didn’t hit anyone.

Jones fired back, and police say she hit him either in his right arm or thigh.

Cox fled the scene.

In a statement, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says Jones demonstrated “professionalism and remarkable calm” in her response.

NYPD dogs tracked the suspect’s trail of blood to the nearby Lafayette Houses.

Officers sealed off the area, but their search came up empty.

Residents say more police are needed in the area.

“It’s well-documented, I mean…most of the stores on this block have been robbed and that’s sad. It’s unfortunate and it needs to be stopped. It needs to be addressed. We need a bigger presence in this neighborhood,” said one Clinton Hill resident.

“It’s horrible it’s really horrible for something like that to happen, especially for him to run in there like that,” said another.

Cox is described as being 5′ 7″ tall, weighing 140 pounds.

Police say he may have bandages on his hands and is believed to still be armed.
