At least six gravestones were vandalized this week in the Congregation Shir He’Harim Cemetery in Brattelboro Vermont. Police officer John Waitekus said his department is investigating and has no evidence at this time that the incident was a hate crime. Over 100 orange and green paintball capsules littered the grounds of the cemetery Friday afternoon. The damage appeared limited to the confines of the BAJC plot and a small patch of woods directly across a dirt road.
The cemetery has been struck by vandals several times in recent years, according Shakun. In 2004, a 16-year-old boy was arrested for damaging a granite post inscribed in Hebrew at the cemetery’s entrance. He was ordered to serve 400 hours of community service and to pay $500 in restitution.
