Eight Jewish institutions in northwest Baltimore County have received more than $161,000 in homeland security funds. They were among 12 nonprofit organizations in the county to be awarded grants from the Baltimore Urban Area Work Group. The Baltimore group is comprised of emergency management officials from Annapolis, Baltimore City and Baltimore, Anne Arundel, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties.
It awarded $650,000 from the Department of Homeland Security to 35 community organizations in the region.
The grants ranged from $800 to $35,000. The money will be used to enhance security at facilities such as synagogues, mosques, interfaith centers, religious schools and community centers judged to be at risk for terrorist attacks.
The northwest Baltimore County organizations receiving funds are:
*Beth Israel Congregation — $12,000
*Beth Tfiloh Congregation and School — $6,000
*The Jewish Community Center (Owings Mills) — $18,500
*Ner Israel Rabbinical College — $25,000
*Suburban Orthodox Congregation — $25,000
*Talmudical Academy of Baltimore — $25,000
*Torah Institute of Baltimore — $25,000
*Beth El Congregation — $25,000
