areivim – it’s not 8 times, but 6 + 2. That may seem like 8 but there is a distinction. Wash each hand 3 times to remove the tumah. Some people hold that after that you should rinse each hand again to wash away the water that removed the tumah. Hence, there are 2 extra washes.
