New York State Senator Eric Adams (D, Brooklyn) held a press conference Monday afternoon, and announced the purchase of bullet proof vests for members of the Brooklyn South Safety Patrol (Boro Park Shomrim). The vests will provide additional protection to the volunteer safety group while it conducts its daily patrols in the Boro Park area. In a seven day period, Boro Park has suffered two separate shooting incidents, one involving a bank robbery and the latest resulting in gunshot injuries to four members of the Boro Park civilian patrol group.

Again, as per my previous post-
Disband the Shomrim. Giving them flack jackets will only cause them to have a stronger sense of recklessness. They are not trained well, not certified and operate with no supervision.
Instead- incorporate them into the Police Auxiliary. Train them, test them and certify them as NYPD officers. Put them in Auxiliary uniforms and have them patrol their home turfs. Supervise them like any other Auxiliary, but also give them powers of ticket and arrest.
So far the Shomrim have succeeded in pointing radios at someone and getting shot. That is wildly dangerous! Thank G-d no one was killed!

I completely agree! All this will do is give them a reason to act with an even greater disregard to personal safety.
They are not allowed to act in such a manner. The NYPD or the FDNY are able to, as they have the training necessary…Shomrim should never put themselves in harm’s way.
This is coming from a person who absolutely values what Shomrim has done over the years- by acting as a SAFETY PATROL. For that, I have respect for Shomrim and their members for what they do to help keep our city safe.
Recently, its become more and more accepted for them to act as the NYPD…putting themselves in harms way directly, without regard to personal safety. THEY ARE WRONG! They have wives, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters…don’t they care?
Pointing a radio at a robber and pretending its a gun…I’m sorry- that is irresponsible and stupid. No two ways about it.
These vests will just give them the extra confidence to do another stupid action that can result in needless deaths, chas v’shalom.
Instead, they should receive training on how to do their jobs as a SAFETY PATROL (look, listen, and report to the proper authorities).
Again…Shomrim, I love you all, and everything you’ve accomplished for our community. Don’t throw everything away to try to be a hero; you aren’t trained whatsoever to do so. Leave that to the professionals.
Thank you.
other new outlets had this story over 24 hours before twn did!
whats gooing on ywn editor???
Misterhock, you should ask what’s wrong with yourself. YW Editor posted this story (with Adams’ statement) long before anyone. Someone that follows YWN knows it. It is the photo\video link that was just added.
