Jerusalem: Two Frum Jews Arrested For Defacing Non-Kosher Deli

The following is a Ynet article:

Two ultra-Orthodox residents of Jerusalem were arrested after being caught by police in the act of vandalizing a deli that sells non-kosher meat.

Police say the two arrived at the deli after morning prayers Saturday and smeared vomit on the door and windows of the establishment.

Avi Ben-David, who runs ‘Iwos Deli’, said that after months of being persecuted he decided to stake out his own place in order to catch the perpetrators in the act.

“We waited for them from 9 am with police forces and caught them red-handed. They said that ‘according to the Torah we have a right to do this’,” Ben-David told Ynet.

Iwos is known for selling non-kosher meat, a fact which renders it a victim of all sorts of vandalism. Towards Passover and during the holiday itself the acts proliferate, as the establishment also dares to sell leavened food.

“Despite the fact that the deli is closed on Saturday, for a number of weeks we have been conspired against. They arrive systematically after prayers, spit on the store and smear vomit, and then leave. It’s appalling,” Ben-David said.

“I hope it doesn’t end with just an arrest, and that they receive a deterring punishment. I also plan to file a civil suit.”

  1. that deli owner should be charged with the crime. they have every city in the world to sell pork in. when he sells it to a single jew he is feeding it into all of israel. please fine the deli owner and banish him and his kind.

  2. There are clear Halachot how to protest (Mecha’a) in Halacha – and this is not one of them.

There are clear Halachot against damaging people’s property – and this qualifies.

  3. To #1 – enahak: What crime is it to sell non-kosher meat? They don’t pretend to be Kosher.

If the people buying it have other places to buy non-kosher meat then you don’t even have “Lifnei Iver”

  4. To Doniels: Please see YD 117 regarding the limitations (restrictions/issur) in doing business with food items which are Torah prohibitions. Regarding availability of the food removing “lifnei iver” I believe that is only true regarding a Rabbinic prohibition (and the issur of m’sayaiya) and not those of Torah origin (and the “lav” of “lifnei iver.” I am not condoning the actions of these people. I am only addressing your comments.

  5. To #5 So when a frum person sins they are automatically not frum? Being frum is a life-style choice as much as a religious status. If one dresses frum, acts frum most of the time, and is viewed by others as frum, they are frum. Humans sin, even frum ones. May we all do some proper tshuva and receive some siyata d’shmaya to make it through the new year without committing chilulei HaShem.

  6. this is where we should take a page out of the arabs book, its bad for us to even discuss it, are you all crazy?!, that deli owner and everyone like him that trashes us should not exist. should we sit here and “discuss for hours” every time someone is hurting us while letting him politely continue?, they laugh at it. we have a right to defend ourselves. get out of our city and land, you have the entire world to do this in, we dont even have this place. get out of here, i hate you.

  7. The deli is closed on Shabbos. Yet, the owner is allowed to sell non-Kosher meat, and Chometz on Pesach?

Will somebody please explain to me, the logic of this?

  8. The shoresh of the problem here is that there are those who consider Yerushalayim to be Ir Hakodesh. Wake up and smell the coffee — it isn’t, and hasn’t been for a very long time. It is the makom churban beis mikdoshaynu, but that’s where it stops. Yeshivos, shuls, and mikvaos are found all over the world. Let this menuval sell his nevalah and chometz b’pesach. He isn’t misrepresenting himself or his goods. No ehrlicher yid is shopping there. Tzaddikim yaylchu bum u’poshim yikashlu bum.

  9. Glad to see that there are people on this site like #s 2,3,4,5,6 that have seichel.

Granted, it is a sad fact that this store exists in Yerushalayim. But acts like these are what cause the chelonim to hate the chareidim. And I can’t blame them….

  10. please analyze this situation. we have someone selling pork in jerusalem. and everyones saying, “great”. im glad that guys store is vanalyzed., wow, look, theyre throwing FINE talmidim in prison because of him too. its not enough that hes doing it to begin with, hes throwing students of torah in jail where they otherwise wouldnt be. that guy is garbage and so is everyone thats complacent. you guys really need to analyze why you think this is no big deal very carefully because its a very big deal and its the tip of an iceberg into other problems. IT IS WRONG!, IT IS WRONG!, IT IS NOT ALRIGHT!,
