Brooklyn Man Charged With Stealing Ambulance

A Brooklyn man is accused of stealing an ambulance just as a patient was being dropped off at the emergency room, police said.

The incident occurred Friday around 11:50 a.m. at John Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson.

Police found Joseph Rey, 30, about a mile from the hospital inside the emergency vehicle. The 2001 Ford ambulance — which belongs to the Terryville Fire Department — is estimated to be worth about $100,000.

Authorities say Rey was by himself and was able to steal the ambulance because the keys were left inside at the time of the theft.

Rey is being charged with grand larceny in the second-degree.
