Nowadays, 18 year old kids are very different from the 18 year olds of long ago. Our kids do not get up at the crack of dawn to milk cows, feed chickens, and help run a household ALL BEFORE going to shul, to school, to work in the fields, whatever. Our kdis are pampered and coddled from the earliest ages, and they are not the same young men and women who were forced to mature at a much earlier age. For the most part, NONE of them demonstrates a readiness to take on the responsibilities of marriage and a family, at age 18 IMO.
