The following article appeared on April 29, 2007 on YWN, as is being re-posted today due to Parshas Noach:
In Schagen, Netherlands a replica of the Teiva, built by Dutch creationist Johan Huibers as a testament to his faith in the literal truth of the Bible was opened to the public yesterday. Reckoning by the old biblical measurements, Johan’s fully functional ark is 150 cubits long, 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide. That’s two-thirds the length of a football field and as high as a three-story house.
Life-size models of giraffes, elephants, lions, crocodiles, zebras, bison and other animals greet visitors as they arrive in the main hold.
A contractor by trade, Huibers built the ark of cedar and pine — biblical scholars debate exactly what the wood used by Noah would have been.
Huibers did the work mostly with his own hands, using modern tools and occasional help from his son Roy. Construction began in May 2005.
Visitors on the first day were stunned.
“It’s past comprehension,” said Mary Louise Starosciak, who happened to be bicycling by with her husband while on vacation when they saw the ark looming over the local landscape.
“I knew the story of Noah, but I had no idea the boat would have been so big.”
In fact, Noah’s Ark as described in the Bible was five times larger than Johan’s Ark.

According to my recollections, the Torah lists the measurements as follows:
Length: 300 Amos
Width: 50 Amos
Height: 30 Amos
So, as Fox pointed out, why did he think “Reckoning by the old biblical measurements, Johan’s fully functional ark is 150 cubits long, 30 cubits high and 20 cubits wide. “?
who’s shiur of an amah did he use??
I wonder if his cubit is the Chazon Ish’s amah? Or perhaps R’ Sholom Goren’s? Or his own?
Little Guy:
What they mean by “the old biblical measurements” is that type of measurement not the size of the ark. Also note at the end of the article: “In fact, Noah’s Ark as described in the Bible was five times larger than Johan’s Ark.”
Is the middle floor full of junk to make it even more realistic?
Noitallmr!!!!! it wasn’t the middle floor that had the junk (garbage).
There was a very interesting, in depth article of this man and his project in Mishpacha Magazine a few months ago.
I wonder if it was actually built int he shape of a boat. I see no reason to assume it was.
According to http://dutcharktwo.wordpress.com/over-de-grote-ark/ he is also building a full size ark. He talks about the question of the size of an Amah.
“the new Ark are based on the sizes mentioned in the Bible. There is difference of opinion about the exact length of the Biblical El, because it is the size from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger and it depends on how large people were in the days of Noah. But in general the El is believed to be 46 cm (18.4 inches). The big Ark is going to be 140 meters (153,2 yards) long, 25 meters (27,35 yards) wide and 18 meters (19,7 yards) high. The big Ark can hold 10.000 people at one time!”

if obama becomes president we’re gonna need it
it looks like he learns pshat in “tzohar” a window
Side note: The teivah weighed between 17,800 and 42,200 tons fully loaded, depending on the length of an amah.
Not impressed. Let’s see him make a mabul
#17 noach couldnt make a mabul either
