I refer you once again to the OP in the aforementioned CR thread. Please see the referenced Gemora, Sanhedrin 108b, Bereishis Rabbah, and Zohar. It is rather clear that the color is a result of Noach’s curse. Whether it was applicable to all of Cham’s progeny or just all of Canaan ben Cham’s progeny, the color is the signature of the afflicted.
