Presidential Candidate trashes Israel

chuck hagel.jpgU.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel told an Arab-American audience that his support for Israel was not “automatic.” Hagel (R-Neb.), who is considering a run for the presidency, told the Arab American Institute’s annual dinner that he believes Israel and the United States have a “special relationship,” but resented being told by a pro-Israel activist that if he wants backing from the pro-Israel community, his support for Israel should be “automatic.” (JTA)

  1. That is called “trashing Israel” because his support is not automatic? Let’s try focus on the real problems Israel has and get caught in these stupidities.

  2. trashes???? editor- please explain yourself….you offer a wonderfu site but articles like these show a complete lack of proffesionalism…. (or is that the point ..to get pp to write responses??)

  3. “Mark Levine” – I am anxiously waiting for your comment on Chuck Shmagel! (In the Mark Levine Lexicon Hagel = Shmagel).

  4. Think Straight: i think you mean mark levin

anyway he “resented being told by a pro-Israel activist that if he wants backing from the pro-Israel community, his support for Israel should be automatic.”

what does he expect if he wants support from any PAC, they will want his support! he is pandering to the arab lobby to get their support so he “automatically” tells them that he will not “automatically” support Israel. i would not vote for hagel

  5. what else would one expect from ANY politician speaking to an arab group.

if you would like a more pro-Israeli quote, just wait until he speaks before a Jewish group. his comments there will most certainly be much more to everyones liking.

  6. Well perhaps we should make alot of expensive full page ads spinning this as a sign that Hagel and his party are wavering from their support for Israel. After all, if he were a democrat, you can be sure that certain people would spin it that way as a sign that his entire party must hate israel.
    Food for thought.

In any event, Hagel has been the bane of his party ever since he came out against the surge. But no democrat would ever be so blunt about israel just to pander to an arab group.

  7. “Presidential Candidate trashes Israel” is clearly inflammatory and incorrect.

In my opinion, he is probably just saying that to his hosts and doesn’t really mean it, which is a shame because, just as with any other ally, Israel should not be automatically supported.

I don’t know what YW editor’s problem is. Any logical, fair person cannot expect Israel (or anyone) to be unconditionally supported, no matter if one is Pro or Anti-Zionist.
