Nanuet: Officials want Route 59 safer for pedestrians

ped crossing.jpgAccording to The Journal News, State transportation officials are looking into ways to make it safer for pedestrians, to cross busy Route 59 in Nanuet. To go between the bus stop and the Exit 14 park-and-ride lot on the north side of Route 59, hundreds of commuters must cross the busy street during rush hour.

The lucky ones make it across in one go, while others must wait on the road’s narrow median, close to traffic, until the light changes again.

The state Department of Transportation recently said that it would investigate long-term solutions, such as widening the center median or building a pedestrian bridge, but said short-term fixes must focus on making the crossing safer.

Possible solutions include changing the timing of the traffic signal there and adding more pedestrian-friendly devices, such as walk signals that count down the time left.
