BTW – until the haskala kicked in there was nothing else but ultra orthodox. that’s when they first had a need to become more open minded. rav shimshon raphael hirsch was NOT even CLOSE to modern orthodox. he simply understood the needs of the generation. but what was before that? and what did he create? i highly doubt either of those things is what MO is now.
