(A YW reader submitted the following email. If you filed your taxes with Turbotax, you should read this!) I am a software tester by profession and I have used Turbotax online for several years. I e-filed with Turbotax in the evening on April 17th, everything seemed fine and I didn’t know that I had any problem. I didn’t hear about Turbotax’s problems reported by the media.
Then today, by pure hashgocho protis, I was looking over old email and noticed the original order confirmation from Turbotax. Knowing nothing about any problems, I was reminded about my filing and out of pure curiously I checked my e-file status. To my horror I saw that it said I had not filed even though I knew that I had gone through all the steps seemingly successfully.
I checked Turbotax’s support site and discovered that they had problems on Tuesday evening with many returns. I followed their instructions and e-filed today, B”H in time for tonight’s new IRS deadline for Turbotax customers. The worst part of all this is that I could just as well have missed tonight’s deadline and not have known about it. There must be others in my predicament who don’t even know they have a problem.
Please publicize the following leto’eles horabbim:
1) Many people, like myself, who e-filed using a Turbotax product (Software or Online)Tuesday evening April 17th thought that they had filed successfully with Turbotax but in fact their return was not filed.
Everyone who e-filed using a Turbotax product Tuesday evening April 17th should check their status before midnight tonight using the following link:
https://turbotax.intuit.com/efile/efile_status_lookup.jhtml
If it shows that you did not file, don’t panic the IRS gives you until midnight tonight to e-file. Follow the instructions here if you have an issue:
http://support.turbotax.intuit.com/cgi-bin/turbotax.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3598
2) If anyone had problems filing with Turbotax on April 17th they can go back now and file before midnight tonight on the 19th and the return will be considered filed on time.
3) Anyone who has not yet filed their Federal and State taxes on time and wants a second chance can do so now by signing up for Turbotax online and e-filing until midnight tonight. Turbotax are not distinguishing between people who had problems and people who didn’t. I verified this with a Turbotax technical support supervisor.
Thanks,
A YW reader.

2 important notes about this:
1. For anyone who lives in an area (including N.Y.) that was affected by the April 16th Storm, the IRS and the State of N.Y. (as well as many other states) have extended the deadline to file until APRIL 26. If filing by paper, write “April 16 Storm” on top of the federal and state returns.

N.Y. Notice: http://nystax.gov/press/2007/extensionapril26.htm
2. This extension only applies to 2006 returns. Tax year 2003 returns, filing before the 3-year statue of limitations expires on obtaining a refund, were not extended. (This is due to the IRS not having statutory authority to extend this deadline beyond the 3 years.)
