Are there good inexpensive tznius staples at shooks in Israel?
I asked someone to look for skirts and dresses at the shook to bring me from Israel.
Wondering if anyone has suggestions on what types of tznius clothes are both less expensive and easier to find in Israel compared to out of town America.
On my last visit, I stocked up on opaque tights so I’m all set in this regard.
Thank you 🙂
February 19, 2017 8:22 pm at 8:22 pm #1217351takahmamashParticipantpssssst . . . the generally accepted spelling is “shuk.”
February 19, 2017 9:19 pm at 9:19 pm #1217352lesschumrasParticipantAlso, I didn’t know staples had to be tznius
February 19, 2017 11:12 pm at 11:12 pm #1217353LightbriteParticipantLol. That’s exactly what I asked for!
February 20, 2017 12:22 am at 12:22 am #1217354Little FroggieParticipantYes, the shook has to be tznius
February 20, 2017 1:47 am at 1:47 am #1217355LightbriteParticipantThanks btw takahmamash. I pronounce it shuk, but often spell Oooo sounds as oo… which in this case U def works.
Didn’t realize until after that “shook” is a word in English and is pronounced differently than shuk.
Appreciate the transliteration grammar 🙂
February 20, 2017 5:11 am at 5:11 am #1217356NechomahParticipantWhat kinds of things do you want someone to buy for you in the shuk? The things that are sold there are not of the highest quality. So many things are available on the other side of the Atlantic. Don’t be dependent on other people for your tznius. You can shop online, especially now in the winter. Kohl’s and other stores sell skirts long enough this time of year. Buy a frum publication and learn about some of the other stores that sell clothes for women. You can order tights online from many places, including essentialapparel and barenecessities. Prices there may actually be better than what you can get things for in EY. It’s great to give financial support to business owners in EY, but you may get better return on your investment by buying things at lower cost in US and supporting Torah learning over here with the difference.
February 20, 2017 6:23 am at 6:23 am #1217357Avi KParticipantLightbrite, I suggest that go to a pharmacy and ask for nails. Be careful to pronounce the ayin properly. They are ????? not ?????.
February 20, 2017 11:09 am at 11:09 am #1217358LightbriteParticipantI was hoping for longer skirts or dresses.
Thought maybe it’s cheaper and easier to find in Israel.
I’ve ordered tops from a frum store online but dresses and skirts were more expensive and I want to try them on first preferably.
Thanks I’ll check out Kohl’s.
February 20, 2017 1:42 pm at 1:42 pm #1217359NechomahParticipantThere are other stores, not just Kohl’s that sell long skirts. You can check out Next and other women’s clothing stores, especially this time of year. You will have a harder time during the summer.
February 20, 2017 1:46 pm at 1:46 pm #1217360WinnieThePoohParticipantMight be easier to find tznius clothing, unless you live in a highly frum area in the US, but not necessarily cheaper.
It’s funny, because so many people I know who have a chance to go to the US or have people coming from the US, do their shopping there!
February 20, 2017 3:54 pm at 3:54 pm #1217361Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantI love Israeli shells – at least the ones they sell at Modasty. The material is much more comfortable than the material the ones in the US are made of.
They also have much nicer colors (I love their colors! I have gotten a lot of compliments on my Israeli shells). They sell pastel-colored shells year-round, unlike the US where you can only find them in the summer (like, hello, my complexion doesn’t change according to the seasons!)
Also, in the US, I couldn’t find pastel-colored shells that were long-sleeved. They were all half-sleeves because they were meant for the summer, but I was afraid to buy half-sleeves because they didn’t have any available to try on so I wasn’t sure if the sleeves were really long enough. Also, I want shells that I can wear year round.
The other maaleh (maybe most important) is that the necklines are much higher then my US shells.
I also love the motto that is written on their bags: ??????? ??? ???? ?????? (Tznius is always in style).
February 20, 2017 5:53 pm at 5:53 pm #1217362NechomahParticipantThere is a company called Kiki Riki. Google Kiki Riki shells. You can get them in 34 colors. I think that should cover almost any pastel you need. You won’t need to deal with getting them over the Atlantic or around the US, as you can just order them on line.
February 20, 2017 6:11 pm at 6:11 pm #1217363Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantAre they long sleeved? And do they have really high necklines? And are they made with the same super-comfortable material the Israeli ones are made with?
And even if they are in 34 colors, do they have the same gorgeous shades as the ones I bought in Israel?
February 20, 2017 6:16 pm at 6:16 pm #1217364NechomahParticipantLU, look at the site. They have long sleeves, 3/4 sleeves, half of the bodice to wear under a dress where you don’t need something all the way to the hips. All kinds. Kids sizes, women’s sizes and probably even maternity. It might be good to get from somewhere that you can see the color yourself and match it up to whatever you’re buying. When I was in a Modasty store recently, they have certain tops that go with the skirt they have on the rack with it. If you have ever gone to Chemise or Basic 4 U, they have tons of colors. You may have to take it in by the shoulders it get the neckline right, but if matching and selection of colors are important, then those are the stores to go to. Chemise is much more expensive. Basic 4 U is about 25 shek for a shirt.
February 20, 2017 6:58 pm at 6:58 pm #1217365WinnieThePoohParticipantI also like Modasty shells – even better than Kiki Riki. They are soft, don’t cling, wash well, can even survive the dryer.
February 20, 2017 8:29 pm at 8:29 pm #1217368LightbriteParticipantQuestion please:
Are the Modasty shells synthetic or cotton?
February 20, 2017 8:39 pm at 8:39 pm #1217369WinnieThePoohParticipantThey have both types. Cotton ones are amazing!
February 20, 2017 9:04 pm at 9:04 pm #1217370Shopping613 ðŸŒParticipantKiki Riki- extremely tight…not so tzniyus.
Modasty-pretty good, but fades and gets ruined after a while. I hear the newer ones are better though
Basic you- Not worth every day shells, if you need a specific color for one shirt they are super cheap. But extremely junky. I’ve seen worse though.
Most chains stores also have in the back. Those are really good quality but expensive and you need to carefully see if they are tzniyus. But then again, just cuz its a frum store doesn’t mean its tzniyus either 🙂
Stardust is a company sold in many shuk type stores. Shells are between 30-60 depeding on the store and from my expirience they are even MORE comfortable than Modasty and last longer.
February 21, 2017 2:29 am at 2:29 am #1217371Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantMatching is not super-important to me, since I mainly wear black or grey skirts. I don’t want a shell that has a neckline that needs taking in, because it ain’t gonna happen.
February 21, 2017 2:30 am at 2:30 am #1217372Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantWinnie the Pooh – +1. Good to know about the dryer. I didn’t know that. I don’t think I ever tried putting them in the dryer. It’s great to know that I can. Especially in the winter, when it’s hard to find a place to hang my clothes to dry.
February 21, 2017 6:47 am at 6:47 am #1217373WinnieThePoohParticipantwait a minute, I made a mistake- I confused modasty with stardust! (thanks shopping for jogging my memory) It’s the stardust ones that I like…I never actually bought Modasty. so don’t go putting the Modasty one in the dryer yet, I don’t know if it will last.
February 21, 2017 1:29 pm at 1:29 pm #1217374Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantWTP – thanks for the clarification.
btw, I don’t know much about these things, but I think the Modasty shells might be lycra.
February 21, 2017 2:54 pm at 2:54 pm #1217375LightbriteParticipantImho… The good thing about the Kiki Rikis when they are snug is that I can wear them under long sleeve tops and dresses with sheer sleeves.
