I have a full set of Soncino Shas that belonged to my father, Z”L. I’m wondering if anyone has an idea where such a set would be appreciated (a yeshiva, a shul, or other place of learning). It would be an aliya for his neshama if someone with yiras shamayim were to continue learning from it! Ideas are welcome.

I’ve only used a Soncino once in my life. I was desperate and had no other options available.

Problem was that I still understood the Aramaic better than I understood the Soncino translation

The problem with the Soncino is that it uses very literal English translations, and makes use of a great deal of Latin abbreviations which are unfamiliar to many. With the advent of Artscroll, I think Soncino has fallen by the wayside. Perhaps a university could use it in a reference library . . .

I would be very happy to take a Soncino Shas. I happen to like the Soncino alot.

I prefer Soncino over ArtScroll for gemarra. There is way too much filler in the ArtScroll translation (e.g. The Gemarra is about to discuss XYZ). However, the Latin is a big problem in Soncino.

Thinking out loud: That is so sweet and beautiful of you to reach out and want to share such a beautiful legacy from your father.

Sending you blessings always for the best.

Someone will surely be very very very grateful with these Soncino Shas books.

    @ 5ish or

    @ Neville ChaimBerlin

Can either of you figure out a recommendation for a location to donate it to, being as YWN does not allow for direct communication?

Thinking out loud: Do you have a newer Gemarra set for your own use and that’s why you’re getting rid of this one?

I replied with the address for a shul which can you it, but I believe my post was deleted because I included the e-mail address for how to contact the gabbaim. I do not know any solution around this as the shul is not always open and I am not going to post the code for the shul on a public forum.

We have a full set of Artscroll, that we are keeping in the family. The Soncino will not get used.

    5ish, try to be creative.

Is there a certain type of shul where you think it would be most appreciated? Don’t try to figure out the logistics now. YWN will not approve a post that specifies how to contact somebody….

and that rule needs to be respected.

    #1228419

Perhaps you should tell everyone where you and/or your Gemaras are –

it matters quite a bit whether you’re in LA or New York, for example.

Other people can post the name of a shul (etc.),

and you can find the contact information yourself.

The translators and editors of the ArtScroll gemoras use the Sonsino Talmud. Ask them if they could use another set.

Cherrybim, given that the Artscroll Talmud Bavli has been complete for a number of years, and Soncino didn’t do a Yerushalmi AFAIK, I don’t think they’d have much use for it.

I’ve seen Soncino gemaras on the dollar-a-book tables in front of Pinter’s in BP. There’s very little demand.

Apologies for my delay in responding.

The Gemaras are in Brooklyn, NY

I posted here because Pinter’s doesn’t seem like a likely destination for someone who appreciates the Soncino. I can leave it there, and it will end up in Shaimos. I am looking for it to get used!

Can u drop off at Touro College? I can arrange for someone to pick it up from the guard there.

5ish, I will find out if that is a possibility. You understand we’re talking about an entire set of Shas. They have not been packed up yet, so I don’t know how many boxes would be involved, or how heavy they would be.

I can’t imagine Touro would allow for a few boxes of Books to sit unnoticed in their lobby?!

How do I know the whole thing won’t be disposed of by security, or a custodian in the building?? It’s not like a shul or Beis Medrash, where holy books are recognized and treated as such by default….

Did you ever see a sign that said “NO DUMPING”? It’s a reminder that you may not leave your unwanted stuff on somebody else’s private property! I think this may be an example of that!

What are your thoughts about my concerns?

I will ask Security to put a call through to the office of someone who will pick it up immediately. How many boxes do you think it will fill?

    OK, I checked:

There are 27 volumes, Bound in Dark Red covers. Each volume is approximately 8 x 12 1/2 inches, with varying thicknesses. We will have to get appropriate boxes (probably from a wine store) to properly pack them up without being too heavy to carry.

@5ish: It appears that you created your account to comment on this thread, so I can’t read any comments you have made previously. I would like to be more convinced that the Shas is actually going to be used appropriately! eg. I’m not looking to donate them to any entity that promotes female rabbas, or Bible criticism.

@Neville ChaimBerlin: Apparently you have been blocked. I hope it was not as a result of an inappropriate comment on this thread.

    Neville ChaimBerlin isn’t Blocked

It’s actually a play on words cleverly concocted by the Mods

Look up Neville Chamberlain former British Prime Minister

Thanks for the clarification, lightbrite! His name comes up as “user not found”, though, so I am unable to read his previous posts. Perhaps it wasn’t his original name?

I’ve mostly been a lurker, commenting rarely, but I haven’t been here for quite a while until I started this thread.

“It’s actually a play on words cleverly concocted by the Mods”

Are you sure it came from the mods? I thought he made up his own name.

And is that connected to the “blocked”? I thought it was two separate jokes (although I have no idea what the second joke is).

Just to clarify, I wasn’t suggesting dropping them off at Pinter’s, I was pointing out that there’s little demand for Soncino, so there are often volumes on the dollar table.

@5ish I am hoping to get the boxes tomorrow. My previous comment was made to explain that I’d appreciate some more reassurance, not that I have any specific suspicions.

I re-read my post, and it looks a bit harsh, so I wanted to clarify!

Why did I think Neville Chaimberlin was a woman?

I meant that the “Blocked” was word play by the Mods. Instead of Blocked as a user in the traditional sense, they meant that Chamberlain “Blocked.”

” between 26 January and 20 February 1939, Chamberlain also issued guarantees of Switzerland, Belgium and the Netherlands, believing through such diplomatic devices he could block Hitler from waging aggression in Western Europe” (Wiki)

LU taught me that the reason why you cannot see the user’s profile and posts is because there is a space in the name.

When I click on yours Thinking out loud, it’s also an error page.

I think Randomex said to put a dash where the spaces are and you can find the person’s profile using the URL that way

addendum to my comment above in regard to 5ish:

The anonymity of the Coffee Room has a crucial role in its maintaining its usefulness. But it gets a little weird when it crosses into real life!

For those who understand this analogy; it’s kind of like going from Mr. Roger’s “Land of make believe”, back to the regular toy train set in his house! (I’m remembering something from when I was in pre-school; my parents moved the TV out into our garage by the time I was in first grade. From there it eventually disappeared.)

This quirk it also exhibited in Shopping613’s thread about her discussion in Seminary.

LB – thanks for explaining the “blocked”. I missed that joke – my history knowledge is rather lacking.

TOL – I’m impressed with your b’kius in Mr. Roger’s. The only thing I remember is his throwing his shoes in the air. I think some of the rest went over my head – I don’t think I ever “chapped” about the make believe land, real life, and train set. Then again, maybe I just wasn’t so into the show.

@ LUL, I never quite chapped either. It was confusing! I’m using adult thinking to describe some sort of blur between reality and imagination!!

Thank you Lightbrite for the tip about adding dashes. It works.

Anyway, UPDATE: The gemaras are currently packed into 4 wine boxes. (The size of a Kedem box that holds six 1.5 liter bottles). IRL!

    LU, yay too 🙂

OK. We are ready to drop off these boxes containing the Soncino Shas, I just need some particulars:

    Who will be using them?

Exactly where should they be dropped off?

How do I ensure that they get to the proper destination?

Did I scare away 5ish?!? It shouldn’t be that hard to post something lomdish that reflects a person’s seriousness and familiarity with traditional learning! Most posters have posted things over time, that gives a general idea about their attitude.

Even in Popa Bar Abba’s disclaimer that nothing he says can be taken seriously, he makes an exception when it comes to comments that refer to halacha.

Thinking out loud, maybe call the place directly and make sure that you can leave them there and someone has arranged to pick them up.

Or ask them if they need the books or where to take them.

I personally would not feel comfortable trusting any poster to just take my stuff and respect and love it based on CR alone.

But I don’t know. Maybe this in itself is a shaila to ask your LOR.

    Sorry, I was ill.

I don’t see how posting something “lomdush” would help. There are even crooked “rabba’s” who can post lomdush things.

I want the Shas. I want it because I like to learn. I do not know for what other reason a person would want a gemara or how one might be used inappropriately???

    5ish: I just got a little… I don’t know, uneasy.

You are 100% correct, and your plain and simple response is kind of what I was hoping for. It wouldn’t have impressed me if somebody really posted something in learning. Cut and paste is pretty simple. Like I said, other posters have a history here, so one can get a general idea what hashkafa they consistently present. But yes, unfortunately there really are apikorsim who learn gemora, in order to back up kefira. I would consider that inappropriate.

I discovered that fact a while back, while looking at Tovia Singer’s website, in which he directly confronts, challenges, and dismantles Jews for J.

So, in response to my questions above… I assume you mean main Brooklyn Campus. Are there days of the week that are more practical than others? Or even times of the day? I know nothing about the schedule there.

@Lightbrite, there is a limit to how much I can do. I would have preferred to put it in an appropriate Beis Medrash, so it could be used by more people. However, in all this time, nobody else has professed interest, or made a reasonable suggestion. Even one individual’s Torah learning is very powerful. I made an attempt to trigger any sort of response. The lack of defensiveness or attempt to prove anything, says a lot!

5ish… Sorry I didn’t mean to offend you.

When someone buys something, even for a dollar, sometimes it is more loved or taken care of than something acquired for free.

Maybe I would be too sentimental with family texts, but I would want to make sure that they went to a good home.

Even in Judaism we’re supposed to check out the charity that we give money too. At least I read that we need to know and don’t give stam without knowing we can trust the organization.

Pretty sure that’s a separate thing than giving money to someone on the street, which in that case we don’t need to know what this person is going to do with the money and it’s not really one’s business.

Also also also… that’s my view and I may be extremely cautious in a sense. Maybe I need more emuna.

At the same time, I’ve witnessed really unpleasant experiences where I gave away something it lead to something tragic.

It wasn’t books, Baruch Hashem. And I’m not going to go into detail, but it’s likely unrelated completely.

Anyway… please forgive me 5ish. You are right and I should have judged favorably.

You’re doing a huge mitzvah and carrying on a legacy here too. Mamash beautiful.

And sending you blessings for a refuah shlema and good health always.
