Meanwhile, we got a bunch of newbies on the scene.. that’s what happens when you leave, LF, – all the regulars leave, and others appear in their place.

January 18, 2017 10:12 pm at 10:12 pm #1209771Person1MemberLU I’m alive and well thanks for asking. I’ve been very busy and couldn’t found time to post. Hope everyone is well and wish all of you all the Brachot.
January 18, 2017 10:52 pm at 10:52 pm #1209772Person1Member“Couldn’t found” this is what happens to my English when I don’t post for a few weeks!
January 18, 2017 11:59 pm at 11:59 pm #1209773Lilmod UlelamaidParticipantPerson1 -welcome back! Hope you’ve been busy with more worthwhile pursuits.
btw, how do you know english so well? Are your parents anglos? Someone in another thread claimed that if a boy in the Israeli Chareidi world learns english, it means he is OTD. The only exception was someone with Anglo parents, so I hope your parents are Anglo… 🙂
Actually, it’s just hard for me to imagine that an Israeli would have such good english unless his parents were Anglos.
January 19, 2017 7:19 am at 7:19 am #1209774Person1MemberThanks for complimenting my English. I appreciate that.
LU Actually having English speaking parents is not enough to be able to write as well as I do. There are people in Israel who speak English fluently but aren’t able to write one proper sentence. Their grammar is aweful and their vocabulary is limited to everyday talk. So Regardless of my parents nationality, I studied very hard.
“if a boy in the Israeli Chareidi world learns english, it means he is OTD”
Lol if an Israeli boy speaks English they probably went to Yeshiva Tichonit (like the Yishuv) receieved academic education or watched movies. Each of the above would give them better knowladge of English than the average Chareidi guy. I suppose there are people who consider these kind of guys OTD lol.
January 19, 2017 6:07 pm at 6:07 pm #1209775Lilmod UlelamaidParticipant“(like the Yishuv)”
Until recently, the Yishuv was the only one besides Maarava. I think there may be some others now.
“watched movies.”
I once went out with a boy who was completely Israeli and whose parents were not from an English-speaking country. He spoke such fluent english that people thought he was American. He had learned it from watching tv as a kid (he was unusually smart, ba”h).
However, he was bt, and not Chareidi. Watching movies is generally not considered acceptable in the Israeli Chareidi world, certainly a lot less than taking english lessons. And the term “otd” was not meant literally in this case – it just meant “doing something unacceptable”, so watching movies would probably fall in that category in this context.
btw, I would imagine that even most boys who did one of the above would not be able to write english so well if they were born in Israel. I don’t think my sister can do that even though she wasn’t even born here, isn’t Chareidi, had an academic education, and grew up in a house that looks like a University library.

Why, thank you! this is one of the greatest compliments I got in some time.
The thing is I studied English mostly through books (as opposed to conversations) and that’s why I use (relatively) complicated sentence structures. Sometimes speaking in a fancier way comes more easily to me than using the simpler way.
Still I suppose writing here takes more effort to me than most other posters, and I often edit my posts. I imagine that if you read my posts closely you’d notice some awkwardness every now and then (or you might have noticed already) In any case Thanks again for this sincere compliment.
As for watching movies, I just wanted to add that It’s often about families rather than individual guys. So I would say “modern” was a better term than OTD. In any case I don’t really mind, I was just amused at how extreme that statement was.

I hope you weren’t offended by that statement (about movies). I was a bit hesitant to write it, but figured it was clear that it wasn’t meant personally and was just in the context of the discussion.
My original statement about boys who learn english being considered OTD actually had to do with a statement made by another poster on another thread, and I actually disagreed with him there. Since your posts came shortly afterwards, it reminded me of that thread and I was sort of trying to be funny (humorous) by bringing it in here. But if you hadn’t seen the original thread, I guess it sounded funny (strange) rather than funny (humorous).
“Still I suppose writing here takes more effort to me than most other posters, and I often edit my posts. I imagine that if you read my posts closely you’d notice some awkwardness every now and then (or you might have noticed already)”
Actually, I think your posts might display much better english than most others in the CR. Maybe that’s because you actually edit yours.
January 20, 2017 12:14 pm at 12:14 pm #1209778Person1MemberNo I wasn’t offended at all. I realized it was humorous. I just found it extra funny because these is the kind of statements some 18 year old boys actually make.
