Is it ok to block traffic at a green light while waiting to turn left?

Suppose you could go to a different store which would not require turning left. Or send your kids to a different school. Or date a different girl.

Or just move out into the intersection and over a little so people could go around you.

It’s not okay if you could have moved further to the left and allow cars to pass you on the right, or if the store doesn’t have good sales, or the school charges too much tuition, or the girl went to college.

Is it okay to make a right turn on a red light?

Joseph: In most places outside of NYC, “Yes unless posted otherwise”. In NYC, “No unless posted otherwise”.

If there is no Left Turn Lane then legally, yes.

how is someone from outside NY supposed to know that in NY there is no turn on red ever allowed? all over the USA its allowed except when signs. well guess what, there are no signs anywhere in NY (of course cause its forbidden anywhere)

I wonder how many of you know why there is no turn on red in NYC (only in the city, outside it may be allowed unless otherwise posted).

During the energy crises in the 1970s, idling was considered a big waste of gas. so instead of making cars wait to turn on red, they (I think it was government mandated) said to turn as long as it was safe to do so. NYC begged for an exemption from this gas-saving policy on grounds that it was too dangerous in such an urban area.

I believe that NYC and Montreal are the only places in North America that have blanket rules outlawing turning right on red.

“there are no signs anywhere in NY”

There are signs at a lot of the entrances to NYC

“NYC begged for an exemption from this gas-saving policy on grounds that it was too dangerous in such an urban area.”

I thought it was because New Yorkers don’t know how to follow directions. Same reason a lot of right turns have stop signs where there should be yield signs.

MA: That’s not my concern. I can only tell you what the law here is in NYC.

There are signs at the entrances to NYC. What I don’t recall seeing are signs that the entire NYC is a tow away zone.

popa_bar_abba – where i live the streets are huge so if you dont make that left turn right then then you might have to wait for another while and go out of your way just turn on your left signal and that way cars know to go around you.
