    1. Do you have food preferences? Specifically, when it comes to fruits and vegetables, do you find that you generally like one more than the other?

Thank you Joseph. That does answer the question, but I should phrase it more clearly:

If you were given two foods, one with the bracha of haetz and one with the bracha of haadama, is it likely that you would like one food better than the other?

I’m probably more likely to better like a haetz food item than a haadama food item.

Happygirlygirl, thanks for responding to the survey. According to halacha, if you are eating Haetz fruits and HaAdama fruits, you should say the Haadama first since you like the Haadama fruits better (unless you happen to like the particular HaEtz fruit better than the Hadama fruit that you are eating). I bet you didn’t know that, because most people think that Haetz always goes first.

qualification: I think you may have mentioned that you are Chassidish. It’s possible that Chassidim hold differently.

Also, Sephardim may hold differently. They might posken that HaEtz goes first.

I thought whichever one you wanna eat at that moment goes first…so if I want a piece of watermelon im gonna eat it even if there’s a peach there

lilmod, why do you think there’s a popular conception that a Haetz brocho should be made prior to HaAdama when both are being consumed? You don’t think there was a mass disinformation campaign in schools to misinform the public on this account, so what else do you attribute as the reason for this being the popular perception?

Joseph, that is a very good question, and I apologize for not responding yet. Since you asked politely, I would like to give you a thorough answer and I don’t have time right now. But I have not forgotten about it, and will try to respond when I have time.

Happygirlygirl, it goes by the one you normally like better. However, if you normally have no preference, but now you do, then it goes by the one you like better now.

So if you normally like peaches better, then you make the HaEtz first even if you want the watermelon now. If you normally have no preference but now you want the watermelon more, then you would say the Haadama first.

However, if the one that you want more now is the Haetz AND it is from the Sheva Minim, then you should make the bracha on the Haetz first even if you normally like the Hadama better.

There are a lot more halachos, but it might be confusing if I go through all of it at once. Those are the basics though.

If I’m eating bread at home and i ordered a sandwhich from a restaurant do I have to make another hamotzi and wash my hands with a bracha when the delivery comes

if you knew it was coming and had it in mind, you don’t

    #1168961

If you knew it would be coming, I don’t think you would have to

do anything again. (The closest thing I saw mentioned in Rabbi Bodner’s sefer was that if someone often brings food home with them, it is considered as though you had that food in mind when

    you made the original bracha.)

    #1168962

Thank you it’s just that it happened last week and in school we learned that if someone went TO the grocery to get more bread you have to do something again….forgot what..so I thought it would be the same halacha

Your teacher was probably talking about a case where you hadn’t planned beforehand to buy more bread.

I was assuming in your case that you had already ordered the sandwich or knew you were ordering it before you made Hamotzi. Is that what you meant?

    #1168964

I ordered it after I ate the bread

Happygirlygirl – I hadn’t realized that you ordered it after you ate the bread. That’s very different. If you weren’t planning from the beginning to order it, then you would need to say another Hamotzi.
