Recently there were two shows that had frum yidden competing on them one a talent show the other an extreme obstacle course competition and they appeared in yeshivish attire the yid on the obstacle course ran it with tzitzis and a yarmulke what is the oilems opinion on such appearances?
July 10, 2016 3:58 am at 3:58 am #1160345JosephParticipantNegative.
July 10, 2016 4:28 am at 4:28 am #1160346kapustaParticipantRespectfully requesting that this thread remain calm and pleasant.

July 10, 2016 5:01 am at 5:01 am #1160348👑RebYidd23ParticipantYou ask on such a topic, so vital to the holiness and purity of this nation, that it be “calm and pleasant”? Oy. Not everything has to be calm and pleasant! Some things must by their very nature be exciting and difficult. It is our duty to preserve our identity at all costs!
July 10, 2016 5:05 am at 5:05 am #1160349Sam2ParticipantJoseph: Why negative, if I may ask?
July 10, 2016 5:27 am at 5:27 am #1160350JosephParticipantOne of them was a singing show. Both mixed men and women and undoubtedly full of inappropriately attired. And both involved mixing for socializing and entertainment with aino Yehudim.

the kedusha of klal yisroel is going lower & lower every year R”L & yidden are following in the chukas hagoyim more & more with looking for ways to convince their yetzer hara that there’s nothing wrong with what they are doing, when in truth they know its against yiddishkeit.
klal yisroel today is also “mingling” with the goyim more & more & thus becoming more friendly with them without realizing how much it is affecting their yiddishkeit…
the music made by jewish singers todays is PURE GOYISH music with just the words changed around to hebrew. It is affecting the neshamos of all yidden listening to it R”L
July 10, 2016 10:31 am at 10:31 am #1160352stam_a_yidMemberJoseph, what’s wrong with socializing with “aino Yehudim” (which should be einam Yehudim)?
Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov, Yoseph, David, Shlomo – they all did it.
July 10, 2016 11:28 am at 11:28 am #1160353Git MeshigeParticipantIf the show ere to take place a night before Yom Kippur, would these people attend? People do Aveiros during the year and go places where they should not go to as frum Yidden, yet on Erev Yom Kippur they would not dream of going to. That reinforces the opinion of Joseph that it is not appropriate.
July 10, 2016 12:20 pm at 12:20 pm #1160355👑RebYidd23ParticipantWhat if the opposite? What if the music of the goyim is PURE JEWISH music with just the words changed around to English?
July 10, 2016 12:32 pm at 12:32 pm #1160356zahavasdadParticipantDepends who the audience is, for many people the more charedi lifestyle is not going to happend and they think judaism is like that. When they see a more moderate version where one can be more like everyone else and be relgious they are open to the idea more whereas they are not open to the idea of dressing and living in 18th century style. They might abhore Dvekas, Niggunim and Chazanusm music
However for the more Charedi people it is not good as it might more open them to the outside world
July 10, 2016 1:44 pm at 1:44 pm #1160357nishtdayngesheftParticipantI wonder why the people who are so gung-ho about these fellows participating in a reality show, ( and it appears that some of the judges are attired less than modestly) and were horrified when a couple from Boro park had their case heard in a reality court show as a favor for the defendant whose costs would then be covered.
The people who feel that this participation is inappropriate also felt that being on a the court show was not a good thing.
July 10, 2016 2:07 pm at 2:07 pm #1160358yosefaleichemParticipantI wonder, is it possible that by doing such things they are actually involving themselves in a kiddush Hashem? Just think about it this way: It could have a positive effect on those people involved in the more modern world or those who are, r”l , a little farther from their yiddishkeit then we would like. These people see frum Jews dressed in their attire and think to themselves – “hmmm, they are actually normal… there’s a way to balance observance with the world we live in…” (though, there’s certainly what to argue regarding if this is truly a balance to achieve or not).
July 10, 2016 3:26 pm at 3:26 pm #1160359JosephParticipantGoyim should now that Jews are not like them. Jews are different. They dress different, they act different, and they live different.
July 10, 2016 3:34 pm at 3:34 pm #1160360Sam2ParticipantJoseph: Right. They wore Kippot and Tzitzis while on the reality shows.
July 10, 2016 3:38 pm at 3:38 pm #1160361yehudayonaParticipantI have no idea why anyone in their right mind, Jewish or not, would appear on a reality show.
July 10, 2016 4:15 pm at 4:15 pm #1160362JosephParticipantSam: A Jew needn’t go on a reality TV show to let goyim know we are different.
July 10, 2016 7:47 pm at 7:47 pm #1160363apushatayidParticipantUnfortunately, for some people these shows are as close as they will ever get to reality.
July 10, 2016 9:15 pm at 9:15 pm #1160364I. M. ShluffinParticipantI’m on yosefaleichem’s side. I think these occasions are incredible opportunities for us to show the world that Jews are people too (more so, actually. We’ll leave it at that) and that there are still people (I’m still talking about us) who adhere to the Torah, which humankind thinks is an outdated and inessential history textbook. You can do a lot in the entertainment industry because viewers, of which there are tons, are open and receptive to what they are watching. If we can make this kiddush Hashem via a halachically safe (maybe they should have worn blinders) and inoffensive way, I think the world can only stand to gain. Again, it’s the old how-do-I-stay-frum-if-I-do-kiruv complex. People who venture out into this circumstances must have a firm, unswerving grip on their yiddishkeit and try not to get dirty while enlightening the mud.
July 10, 2016 9:53 pm at 9:53 pm #1160365charliehallParticipant“I have no idea why anyone in their right mind, Jewish or not, would appear on a reality show.”
Nor do I.
Yet another reason to vote against Trump.
July 10, 2016 10:00 pm at 10:00 pm #1160366charliehallParticipantNobody has ever come up with a decent definition of “Jewish Music”.
Practically all the major Broadway composers of the mid 20th century were Jewish. (Cole Porter was a notable exception.) Does that count as “Jewish music”?
How about Giacomo Meyerbeer, Fromental Halevy or Arnold Schoenberg?
July 10, 2016 10:33 pm at 10:33 pm #1160367nishtdayngesheftParticipantTypical of Charlie Hall to support te most fraudulent person to run for President in recent history.
Trump is not great, but he is not nearly as fraudulent as Hillary.
Calling her honest is like Calling OO frum and Torah observant.
Completely and obviously utter contradictions.

Hein am l’vadad yishkon…..
July 11, 2016 1:39 am at 1:39 am #1160369charliehallParticipant“Trump is not great, but he is not nearly as fraudulent as Hillary.”
Only someone who (1) has been living in a cave for the past year, (2) is not sufficiently connected to reality to know fact from fiction, or (3) is a deceitful liar would call Trump less fraudulent than Hillary.
There was fraud in all of Trump’s bankruptcies.
There was fraud in Trump’s illegal fake university.
And Trump appears to have bribed two state Attorneys-General to stop investigations into his fraudulent fake university.
Trump’s public statements are so full of falsehoods that fact checkers can’t publish the debunkings fast enough to keep up. Just to give you an example, politifact.com has examined the truthfulness of 158 statements by Trump, 95 were rated “false”, or “pants on fire”. For Clinton, the number was 16 out of 120.
I guess Trump figures that if you lie often enough it won’t be possible to get countered. And you have drunk the Kool-Aid.
And that isn’t even the worst thing about him — A crook would be better than someone who incites nativism, racism, and anti-Semitism, which is the way Trump is building his campaign.
July 11, 2016 2:43 am at 2:43 am #1160370popa_bar_abbaParticipantCharlie, your political rants are so cute.
July 11, 2016 3:24 am at 3:24 am #1160371☕ DaasYochid ☕ParticipantThey’re both frauds. One is not a bigger fraud than the other; they’re both total frauds. Perhaps Hillary didn’t lie as often because she didn’t find it to her advantage as often, but she has shown she will lie, and we’re talking about major lies, in her self interest.
She has also shown that she puts her self interest above national security. If not for political considerations, she would clearly be facing criminal charges in that regard.
Maybe Trump would also put self interest above national security, but that hasn’t been proven (yet?).
July 11, 2016 3:33 am at 3:33 am #1160372WolfishMusingsParticipantBah. I don’t like Clinton and I don’t like Trump, and I’m not going to vote for either of them, regardless of what any rav says.
I will either vote for a third party candidate, or else just leave the presidential portion of my ballot blank.

July 11, 2016 8:48 am at 8:48 am #1160373profound101Participantwhy does every random conversation nowadays somehow end up as an argument about the 2016 presidential candidates?
July 11, 2016 10:32 am at 10:32 am #1160374TheGoqParticipantI think it’s very cool they say to the world yes we are orthodox jews yes we are different but we are still people.
July 11, 2016 11:13 am at 11:13 am #1160375zahavasdadParticipantTrump might be alot of things, but Anti-Semite he is not
A real anti-semite would not only not allow their daughter to marry a jew, let alone convert to one (One of the Nuremberg laws was to prohibit cohabitation between jews and aryans).
July 11, 2016 11:47 am at 11:47 am #1160376nishtdayngesheftParticipantI’ve drunk the kook aid? I said Trump is not good. You say the person who is the most corrupt individual running for national office in recent history is good.
She is terrible, dishonest and hugely corrupt.
Illegally setting a personal email server to hide what she was doing?
Deleting emails? (Why is that different from shredding and burning tapes?)
Pay for play wth the Clinton Foundation? (Which, by its own admission filed incorrect 990s which it will not amend).
Ex parte communication with the Attorney General supposedly looking into her illegal acts?
You’ve gone far beyond just sipping Kool Ade.
Frankly, I don’t think there is a word Hillary or her rabid supporters, like you, say that may contain any honesty.

My response:
R Matisyahu Solomon shlita disagrees with your second sentence above. In the book of his speeches written up by Rabbi Reinman, he expressly says that songs composed by Goyim do not adversely affect our neshamos as long as the lyrics are okay. If I had the book I could give you a direct quote.
July 11, 2016 12:31 pm at 12:31 pm #1160378benignumanParticipantI like the phrase “drunk the kook-ade” in reference to Trump followers.
To paraphrase PJ O’Rourke, Hillary is liar but she is a liar within the normal political parameters. Hillary is wrong about most things but she is wrong within normal parameters.
In other words, Hillary is a Democrat politician like most other democrat politicians. Trump is a vain, unstable con-man who lies with incredible impunity to a degree heretofore unseen in Presidential politics. He is Democrat’s funhouse mirror image of a Republican with no care for Constitutional limits, or fealty to any ideal greater than himself.
Vote Libertarian or some other third-party. And if you live in a swing state, vote Clinton to make sure that Donald Trump does not take the Presidency.
July 11, 2016 1:26 pm at 1:26 pm #1160379yehudayonaParticipantCharlie, when I said no one in his right mind would appear on a reality show, I wasn’t thinking of Trump, whose reality show was clearly to his benefit (and who’s probably not in his right mind). He apparently made a lot of money from it and it increased the value of his brand. Arguably, he wouldn’t have made it as far as he has in the presidential race if not for his reality show.
July 11, 2016 1:30 pm at 1:30 pm #1160380Sam2ParticipantDY: I think Trump has proven that. He has threatened the USGA with political reprisals over something as petty as them moving a tournament off of one of his golf courses (which is not a national security issue, but would definitely hurt the economy).
His threat to “make the wall 10 feet taller” when he didn’t like something the former Mexican president said about him is something petty and personal that will definitely have national security implications.
Also, he won’t release his tax records because he intentionally undervalues his properties by extreme amounts to avoid paying taxes on them, putting the burden of his wealth on regular citizens.
July 11, 2016 1:51 pm at 1:51 pm #1160381ubiquitinParticipantWhile there is no question both are liars Tom Friedman Said it best in a piece entitled
here is an excerpt:
and his conclusion
“What is grating about Hillary is that her prevarications seem so unnecessary and often insult our intelligence. But they are not about existential issues. As for Trump, his lies are industrial size and often contradict each other. But there is no theory behind his lies, except what will advance him, which is why Trump is only scary if he wins. Otherwise, his candidacy will leave no ideas behind. It will just be a reality TV show that got canceled.”
zahavsdad
while Trump may not be an-antisemite (and I agree he isnt, he isnt anti-anything the only thing he stands for is Trump) He has repeatedly shown a tolerance for the antisemites and racists in his midst as long as they support him which is worrisome
July 11, 2016 2:25 pm at 2:25 pm #1160382Shopping613 🌠ParticipantWhat shows were these?!
July 11, 2016 2:42 pm at 2:42 pm #1160383zahavasdadParticipantA frum couple appeared on the peoples Court
A few frum people have appeared on America’s Got Talent
Some frum people have appeared on jeoprady
A frum girl appeared on Americas Top Model
July 11, 2016 8:25 pm at 8:25 pm #1160384apushatayidParticipantUnfortunately, way to many frum yidden have shown up on true reality tv, the news, accused of many unsavory things.
July 11, 2016 10:24 pm at 10:24 pm #1160385Sam2ParticipantAGT is a talent show, not a “reality” show. There’s a difference in those genres. Reality shows are almost always perverse and disgusting. Talent competitions are not always so (though they sometimes are).
Also, a Smicha student recently appeared on American Ninja Warrior (it’s an obstacle course-running show).
Leyzer: He said it in Matnas Chaim on Purim, no?
July 12, 2016 12:09 am at 12:09 am #1160386zahavasdadParticipantMany did not like the frum teenage contestant on Americas Got Talent. Even Howard Stern blushed at his jokes
July 12, 2016 2:23 am at 2:23 am #1160387Sam2ParticipantYeah. That kid was bad. These guys last week were fan. They were beat-boxing.
July 13, 2016 3:49 pm at 3:49 pm #1160388flatbusherParticipantI do wonder how these frum guys with the tzitzis even know these shows exist? I don’t take any particular pride in their appearance as frum but people do what they do, and if there is no REAL halachic issues involved, as opposed to those who want to make everything assur, let them have their fun. But I hardly think it rises to the level of a kiddush Hashem.
July 13, 2016 10:44 pm at 10:44 pm #1160389☕️coffee addictParticipantFlatbusher,
People can’t wear Tzitzis if they have a tv?
July 13, 2016 11:40 pm at 11:40 pm #1160390writersoulParticipantThese guys are Modern Orthodox baalei teshuva, of whom at least one regularly performs in non-Jewish venues (as well as Jewish), so they probably look at this in a very different way than the majority of the people commenting here. They dressed the way they did because they’re not trying to hide their identities- to them, there’s no contradiction. They’re coming from a completely different frame of reference.
Bear in mind also- while they’re already earning side money from this (Josh performs freelance with the Maccabeats, and Ilan is in the YU a cappella group the Y-Studs [don’t ask]), this is also a great way for both of them to get good publicity- which they’ve obviously already gotten in droves. Even if they’re eliminated in the next round, they’re set for life.
And, of course, I’m sure they’re having fun 🙂
July 13, 2016 11:42 pm at 11:42 pm #1160391writersoulParticipantPersonally, I’ve always wanted to be on Jeopardy, and am on their email list, but their trials are usually on Shabbos.
Just curious, what do people think of the frum people on the Israeli talent shows? There are frum people in almost every season- in particular, check out Eyal Cohen on The Voice, who was phenomenal and whose family is adorable.
July 14, 2016 2:29 am at 2:29 am #1160394YW Moderator-29 👨💻ModeratorTo whom it may concern,
They are frum Jews. I don’t plan on sending the disparaging comment (presumptuous comment) thru no matter how you phrase it. Sorry.
July 21, 2016 8:29 pm at 8:29 pm #11603952scentsParticipantwhat in the world were they thinking, they will get through with some beat boxing??
July 22, 2016 2:03 pm at 2:03 pm #1160396writersoulParticipantThey got about ten different newspaper writeups- they’re in exactly the place they want to be right now 🙂 (not to mention that as these shows are prerecorded they’ve known about this for quite a while…)
